These processes emphasize the interrelationship between the abiotic and biotic factors found in our world. In a time where many high school science classes are lacking in quality laboratory education, there is a need for accessible chemical equipment that enhance teaching fundamental concepts of chemistry with ease and at a low cost. The DualSpec handheld smartphone spectrometer aims to be a quality open-source spectroscopic instrument that can easily be made and used at home by people of any scientific level. Although research indicates there is a connection between reflection and critical thinking, there is limited empirical research related to this topic in high school science classrooms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of gender and type of inquiry curriculum (open or structured) on science process skills and epistemological beliefs in science of sixth grade students. The current study took place in an urban northeastern middle school. The researcher utilized a sample of convenience comprised of 303 sixth grade students taught by four science teachers on separate teams. From elementary school to the college level, nationwide trends indicate that males are achieving higher in science than females. The aim of this study was to compare the achievement of boys and girls studying 10th grade biology in the public school system. To achieve this a composite survey of attitude toward science, locus of control and achievement in science was administered to 221 biology students in the 10th grade of a large school district situated in a suburb of Rochester, NY.
