Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are important topics taught in most high school biology curriculum. These processes emphasize the interrelationship between the abiotic and biotic factors found in our world. The portrayal of these relationships to students is recommended by using crosscutting concepts such as Energy and Matter: flow, cycles, and conservation and Systems and System Models, which are discussed in this study. The conceptual knowledge of photosynthesis and cellular respiration has been studied widely amongst middle, high school, and college students. Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) has emerged as an enabling biotechnology for research and biomanufacturing as it allows for the production of protein without the need for a living cell. Applications of CFPS include the construction of libraries for functional genomics and structural biology, the production of personalized medicine, and the expression of virus-like particles. Concept Maps And Feedback In Statistics Learning: Exploring The Effect Of Expert Map Feedback And Peer Feedback On Concept Map Structure, Theresa A. Hickey

This mixed methods exploratory study examined the effects of two types of feedback – Peer and Expert Map – on Concept Maps used as learning tools in a statistics classroom. Of interest were possible effects of feedback on Concept Map structure (determined by structural scores), on structural classification (Discrete, Integrated), and on student choice of starting concept (General, Specific). Student perceptions of feedback and the role of mapping in statistics learning were elicited using a 12-item questionnaire. Two open-ended responses were coded by themes. The Impact Of Tracking Students In Mathematics On Middle School Student Achievement Outcomes, David P. Glasner

The purpose of this study was to explore whether and how tracking structures in mathematics courses at the middle school level relate to differences in achievement between white and black students. This study used propensity score matching to compare the achievement outcomes of students enrolled in advanced mathematics classes, with students of comparable ability and background enrolled in grade-level math classes. The study sample was comprised of 1,510 students. Building knowledge through a process of construction is a common framework through which school science is taught. In this research, I investigated teachers’ interpretations of the goals of professional development and factors that contributed to enacted instructional practices. A multiple-case study design was used to examine the interpretations of four high school teachers participating in a year-long professional development program with a standards-based framework for mathematics education.
