Investigating The Influences Of Summer Experiences On Students' Self-Efficacy In Stem, Olivia Palicki Jan 2023

Investigating The Influences Of Summer Experiences On Students' Self-Efficacy In Stem, Olivia Palicki

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Improving high school students’ interest and confidence in STEM is a national priority. Educators and stakeholders in educational policy have pressed for increasing opportunities to engage students in authentic science experiences and focus on teaching 21st century skills. The purpose of this case study was to investigate how a summer research experience may have influenced high school students’ self-efficacy and career interests in STEM subjects and practices as well as identifying what students learned from their experience in the program. Pre/post program surveys were analyzed to measure change in student attitudes towards STEM and to capture students learning outcomes from …

Measuring Students' Pro-Environmental Attitudes And Behaviors Before And After Demonstration-Based Instruction, Collin Ryan Jan 2022

Measuring Students' Pro-Environmental Attitudes And Behaviors Before And After Demonstration-Based Instruction, Collin Ryan

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

A growing amount of research exists on environmental education programs which incorporates the viewpoints of students into its assessment of the program’s efficacy. This research seeks to add to that body and evaluate an environmental education program about the sustainability of plastics, using both quantitative and qualitative data collected from participating students. The data was collected after a 90-minute instructional block of demonstration-based environmental education meant to inform students on the variability of plastics’ properties and the sorting and remolding processes of recycling. It also aimed to help build pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors in the students, and a sense of …

Growth Vs. Fixed Mindsets In College Mathematics Education, Bryan Yaeger, Lynne Pachnowski Jan 2020

Growth Vs. Fixed Mindsets In College Mathematics Education, Bryan Yaeger, Lynne Pachnowski

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between college mathematics professors and whether they have a growth or fixed mindset towards the students in their classrooms. This paper will share the results from a survey that was constructed with 38 participants - all of which are college mathematics professors in the state of Ohio. This survey focused on asking questions that would relate the professors to either having growth or fixed mindset traits. The survey also asked for the demographics of the participants, which helped classify similarities between those with growth or fixed mindset ideals. After analyzing …

Chemical Kinetics Using A Smartphone Spectrometer, Mary Greggila Jan 2019

Chemical Kinetics Using A Smartphone Spectrometer, Mary Greggila

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In a time where many high school science classes are lacking in quality laboratory education, there is a need for accessible chemical equipment that enhance teaching fundamental concepts of chemistry with ease and at a low cost. The DualSpec handheld smartphone spectrometer aims to be a quality open-source spectroscopic instrument that can easily be made and used at home by people of any scientific level. This research sought to show that the DualSpec could be used to teach higher level spectroscopic concepts such as those used in chemical kinetics. The DualSpec was compared to a commercial spectrometer using the commonly …

Virtual Experiments And Simulations In The Science Classroom, Nicole Merchant Jan 2019

Virtual Experiments And Simulations In The Science Classroom, Nicole Merchant

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The main goal of this paper is to analyze the use of virtual experiments and simulations within the science classroom. This analysis will be completed by first reviewing the learning theories in education. Then I will specifically analyze virtual experiments and how they are used in the science classroom. At the time of this study I had the privilege of completing my student teaching experience in a high school science classroom. This gave me the ability to have direct contact with students in order to observe their interest and engagement with simulations as well as their learning throughout the semester. …

The Presence Of Birth Parents And Students’ Mathematics Achievement, Darian Kanouff Jan 2018

The Presence Of Birth Parents And Students’ Mathematics Achievement, Darian Kanouff

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This paper discusses the relationship between the presence of birth parents in a student’s home life and their grade last semester in mathematics. Our[1] study consisted of two sets of rosters from two different urban high schools in a large metropolitan district. The 238 students involved are currently enrolled in either AP Calculus AB, Pre-calculus, Applied Statistics, Algebra II, Honors Geometry, or Geometry. The research showed that 30.8% of students who live with only their birth mother received an A or a B for the semester while 17.5% percent failed their mathematics course. In contrast, 58.4% percent of students …
