As educational practices start to focus on three-dimensional (3D) learning for students by incorporating practices, concepts, and core ideas, it is vital to understand how alternative forms of idea development affect student understanding. In a revolutionary 2015 commentary, Quillin and Thomas (2015) created the model Drawing-to-Learn to convey the need for drawing in Biology classrooms. Current policy mandates that emergent bilingual (EB) students partake in standardized assessments before they are fully proficient in English. Additionally, standardized assessments are quickly converting to an online administration. The increase in design features inherent in computer-based assessments will most likely increase the number of construct-irrelevant factors and affect the accessibility of assessment items for EBs.

We describe the STEM Careers Infographic Project (SCIP), an outreach project for 8th grade students. The goal of SCIP was to get students interested in STEM by letting them research their own careers and create infographics. We utilized the CSTA’s Computational Thinking definition and progression chart to help develop the curriculum; and Sandoval’s conjecture mapping framework to structure and evaluate the project. This project was implemented in spring of 2015 with 153 students, 68% of which were from traditionally underserved communities. Realistic mathematics education (RME) is guided by the notion that mathematics is the human activity of mathematizing the world. In much of the RME literature, mathematizing is theorized to be an individual activity, and the products of mathematizing—mathematical productions and mathematical knowledge—are theorized to be individual constructions and private knowledge. In this dissertation I extend these ideas and discuss how mathematizing is mediated by, and distributed across, cultural artifacts. Educational inequity can be seen in both student participation and achievement outcomes. In science education, as in many other areas of education, disparities in equity of achievement (NCES, 2011) and equity of participation in science learning environments (Brown & Ryoo, 2008; Calabrese Barton, 2003) have been well documented.
