This paper takes aim at one specific, as well as basic, need in teamwork and interdisciplinary projects – ethics and its implications for professional practice. A preliminary study suggests that students majoring in industrial technology degree programs may not have adequate opportunity to formally study and engage in ethical aspects of technology vis-à-vis the practices of the profession. It is reasonable to assume that the ethical dilemmas faced by an industrial technologist would parallel those of engineers and managers. Studies have shown that students form many of their overall career and educational attitudes as early as elementary school. Thomas Edison was a noted engineer while Jean Piaget made his fame in children’s educational psychology. Piaget’s “cognitive constructivism” has been adopted in many early childhood programs, but it also applies to engineering education and its “hands-on” approach, especially in laboratories and project-based courses. One of the curriculum frameworks of this initiative is titled Science and Technology/Engineering. Building on a successful high school internship program started by a National Science Foundation grant in 1997, an internship program has been offered the past two years that provides students opportunities to join university research teams and investigate industrial work environments. The interns develop complete lesson plans targeted at a 5 th – 8th grade audience that are based on the university research and industrial sponsor’s work. Project ExCEL (Extended Classroom for Enhanced Learning) brings the capabilities of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) into classrooms. University and industry personnel, working together, have developed a web-based interface to allow schools to control a modern SEM. The interface allows a user control of the operating parameters of the microscope, stage movement, and chemical analysis. Such total control is not available on any other system. NC State’s involvement in the NSF-sponsored SUCCEED Coalition has led to a number of changes to the freshman year of the engineering curriculum as reported previously (e.g., ASEE 1999, Porter, et al.). An explicit objective of these changes was to retain in engineering those students who were qualified and interested in engineering, but were leaving engineering for other reasons. While a number of isolated innovations have been studied and have demonstrated positive benefit, this study looks at each freshman cohort from 1987 through 1998 to evaluate changes in retention in engineering during that period. To provide a basis for the development of interaction curves for tubular beam-columns of annular cross section, a general purpose beam-column computer program is developed, and used to determine ultimate load capacities. The paper presents the analytical model and the computer method. The analytical results are compared with published test data as well as experimental data obtained as part of this project.
