The Toying With TechnologySM program (TWT) has been offered to preservice elementary and secondary teachers for ten years. This program is designed to explain the principles behind many of the technological innovations in wide use today. This is accomplished through hands-on laboratory experiences. This includes, but is not limited to, experiences with programming, global positioning systems, and biomedical engineering. This program uses engineering as a basis to teach math, science, technology and problem solving concepts. This paper will describe the twelve week experience of a home schooled group engaged in the TWT program. Home schooling is a growing trend in ...

Engineering faculty have offered an engineering literacy course entitled Toying With TechnologySM to elementary and secondary education majors for eight years. Studies have shown that students form many of their overall career and educational attitudes as early as elementary school. Schoolteachers who have an appreciation for technology will likely convey that appreciation to their students. This will, in turn, broaden the horizons of their students regarding the opportunities they may have regarding careers in scientific and engineering disciplines. This appreciation is achieved through various engineering activities, many of which involve LEGO© robotics. Providing field experiences for future teachers so they ...

Students in today’s world grow up surrounded by electronic and electromechanical gadgetry and become adept at using such gadgetry at an early age without necessarily understanding the underlying science and technology. Garage door openers, TV remote controllers, microwave ovens, remote-control toys, and cellular phones are but a few such items in wide use today. As complex as these gadgets seem on the surface, much of the scientific and technological mystery behind their functionality can be explained in simple terms well within the grasp of the high school, or even middle school students. The primary purpose of this project is ...
