Retaining Information Technology Employees In Higher Education, Mary Holmes
Retaining Information Technology Employees In Higher Education, Mary Holmes
Dissertations
The retention of qualified Information Technology (IT) employees is at an all time low within higher education institutions. IT personnel are essential for higher education institutions to effectively integrate technology into their educational programs. These IT employees contribute to their institution's teaching/learning mission, while simultaneously supporting complex and highly visible administrative operations. Yet, all previous research regarding IT employee retention issues had only been conducted within corporate settings.
To examine factors related to IT employees' retention within public higher education, an internet-based study was sent to IT employees in all four-year public universities throughout Michigan. The survey included questions within …

Ethnographic Study Of Buddhist Education, Based On Burgess' Social Science Method At An American University And A Private Buddhist Organization, Wan-Ming Lu
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The literature shows that there are many studies about Buddhism in the United States and religion on college campuses, but few studies specifically about Buddhism in American universities. The purpose of this study is to explore how American college students approach and learn about Buddhism. A qualitative research study of clinical ethnography was applied to conduct this study at the Florida International University (FIU) and Florida Buddhist Association (FBA). FBA was chosen to compare with FIU so that the features of Buddhist education at FIU would be clearer.
Eight students and four teachers (instructors) were interviewed at FIU; and two …

Assessing Student Learning And Development In Fraternity And Sorority Affairs, Terrell L. Strayhorn Ph.D., Amy J. Colvin
Assessing Student Learning And Development In Fraternity And Sorority Affairs, Terrell L. Strayhorn Ph.D., Amy J. Colvin
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
Assessment in higher education has increased over the past several decades. Pressure from constituencies for colleges to demonstrate their effectiveness in measurable terms and loss of public trust in higher education drive the movement toward assessment. Presently, assessment is part of the accreditation process. Student affairs practitioners, including those working with fraternities and sororities, are not immune to these pressures. Yet, many student affairs professionals report feeling inadequately skilled in conducting assessment projects and need guidance in this area of their work. The purpose of this manuscript is to discuss the importance of assessment and how it relates to fraternity/sorority …

Research Revisited: Cognitive Effects Of Greek Affiliation In College: Additional Evidence, Ernest T. Pascarella Ph.D., Lamont Flowers, Elizabeth J. Whitt
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
Previous research found broad based negative effects of fraternity/sorority affiliation on standardized measures of cognitive development after one year of college. Following the same sample, and employing essentially the same research design and analytic model, the present study found that the negative effects of fraternity/sorority affiliation were much less pronounced during the second or third years of college.

Fraternity And Sorority New Members’ Self-Regulation Of Alcohol Use, Andrew Wall Ph.D., Janet Reis Ph.D., Dan Bureau Ph.D.
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
One hundred seventy three first year fraternity and sorority members completed an on-line survey on alcohol expectations, perceived capacity for regulating their alcohol intake (self-pacing), weekly consumption of alcohol, and perceived peer consumption. The 146 students who reported knowing how to self-pace planned to do so, were less susceptible to expectations to drink, drank less in a week and drank fewer days when compared to the 27 students reporting uncertainties in being able to self-pace. Opportunities for enhancing student’s capacity for selfregulation are discussed.

The Limits Of Service-Learning In Higher Education, Dan W. Butin
The Limits Of Service-Learning In Higher Education, Dan W. Butin
Education Faculty Publications
This article takes a critical look at the attempted institutionalization of service-learning in higher education. It asks whether service-learning can become deeply embedded within the academy; and if so, what exactly is becoming embedded. Specifically, this article suggests that there are substantial pedagogical, political, and institutional limits to service-learning across the academy. These limits, moreover, are shown to be inherent to the service-learning movement as contemporarily theorized and enacted. The article concludes by reframing some of the grounding assumptions of service-learning to position it as a disciplinary field more suited for becoming genuinely embedded within higher education.

This qualitative study examined the impact of enrollment management, marketing and strategic planning practices (or lack thereof) on enrollment trends in two graduate programs across five Grand Rapids, Michigan-based institutions of higher education. Deans, department heads or program directors associated with the Master's of Business and Master's of Education degrees in each institution were interviewed, as were regional administrators and marketing personnel for a total of 15 participants. In addition, the challenges faced by these graduate programs and how such challenges impacted enrollment patterns were analyzed.
Findings indicate that to a large degree the concepts of enrollment management, marketing and …
Biorefining Of Renewable Resources—Emerging Opportunities For Engineering Education, Kurt A. Rosentrater
Biorefining Of Renewable Resources—Emerging Opportunities For Engineering Education, Kurt A. Rosentrater
Kurt A. Rosentrater
The society in which we live has developed an insatiable demand for energy and material goods. Historically these needs have primarily been met by utilizing fossil fuels and other nonrenewable raw materials. As environmental concerns grow, however, renewable resources are gaining increased attention. This paper examines industrial biorefineries, which are at the leading edge of the development of emerging biobased industries. Biorefineries, similar in concept to traditional petroleum refineries, utilize various conversion technologies to produce multiple products, including fuels, chemicals, industrial products, and electrical power from renewable biomass sources, such as corn stover, residue straw, perennial grasses, legumes, and other …
Threats To The Operational Use Of Situational Judgment Tests In The College Admission Process, Michael J. Cullen, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens
Threats To The Operational Use Of Situational Judgment Tests In The College Admission Process, Michael J. Cullen, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study examined the coachability of two situational judgment tests, the College Student Questionnaire (CSQ) and the Situational Judgment Inventory (SJI), developed for consideration as selection instruments in the college admission process. Strategies for raising scores on each test were generated, and undergraduates were trained in the use of the strategies using a video-based training program. Results indicated that the CSQ was susceptible to coaching. In addition, the scoring format of the CSQ was found to be easily exploited, such that trainees could increase their scores by greater than 1 SD simply by avoiding extreme responses on that test. The …

Achievement Investment Prowess: Identifying Cost Efficient Higher Performing Maine Public Schools, Ida A. Batista
Maine Education Policy Research Institute
Throughout the United States the debate has been frequent, intense, and at times adversarial over how to fund education adequately. Maine has been trying to identify higher performing schools in the hope that practices that contribute to success at higher performing schools can be adapted at similar schools throughout the state. The 1997 establishment of Essential Programs and Services, an adequacy based funding model, has a primary goal to ensure success for all of Maine's children based on generating and distributing funds more equitably throughout the state. However, identifying higher performing schools based on achievement misses inclusion of fiscal responsibility …

Undergraduate Teaching Assistants And Their Use Of Nonverbal Immediacy Behaviors In The Basic Communication Course, Wesley T. Durham, Adam C. Jones
Undergraduate Teaching Assistants And Their Use Of Nonverbal Immediacy Behaviors In The Basic Communication Course, Wesley T. Durham, Adam C. Jones
Basic Communication Course Annual
Over the past two decades, perhaps no instructional communication topic has been researched as thoroughly as teacher immediacy. However, one important area of the existing teacher immediacy literature that remains underdeveloped is how undergraduate teaching assistants enact immediacy behaviors, and how, if at all, students respond to these teaching assistants differently based on the enactment of these behaviors. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to gain a clearer understanding as to what, if any, immediacy behaviors are used by undergraduate teaching assistants in the basic communication course at a large Midwestern university. The researchers conducted 50 hours of observation …
