Policies recognizing gender-neutrality and non-binary identities are needed in youth development programs to create a truly inclusive program and a sense of belonging for all youth. This study explored if and how written statewide policies regarding gender- neutrality can most effectively serve members, agents, and volunteers of the 4-H Youth Development Program in the state under study. The context of this study was the 4-H program in one state (agents and administrators as participants) and 4-H programs around the United States (administrators as participants).Preliminary qualitative and quantitative data from my research study indicated that agents in the state under study …
Black Girls Matter: The Impact Of Historical Representation On Contemporary Education, Carolyn Strong
Black Girls Matter: The Impact Of Historical Representation On Contemporary Education, Carolyn Strong
Dissertations
A long history of misogynoir and negative stereotypes about Black
girls and women can be found throughout the literature and popular
culture of the United States. These stereotypes inform the lived
experience of Black girls and women, and in particular interfere with
African American girls’ ability to thrive in a school environment. An
autoethnographic research approach shows that various strategies, in
particular, Black girl-centric spaces, have proven to be helpful in
supporting Black girls who have to negotiate varying degrees of
hostility in general environments. These could be applied more broadly
to improve Black girls’ mental, psychological, physical, and
educational …

An Examination Of African American Male Educators' Perceptions Of Relationships And Discrimination, Akiva S. Carson
Dissertations
In the field of education, African-American men are greatly underrepresented across all school settings. In the state of Illinois of nearly 130,000 certified educators, there are less than two thousand (2,000) African American males across the state. Through a critical race theory lens, the focus of this narrative study was to explore what can be learned by researching/re-framing how African-American educators perceive their experience of developing relationships across educational domains and how they make sense of the ways in which they experience discrimination and construct relationships with others. Through the use of interview, observation and journal responses, insight into their …

Impact Of Single Gender Programs On Achievement, Attendance, Discipline, And Character: A Program Evaluation Project, Carla L. Sparks Dr.

The instance of single gender education in American public schools has risen since the 2006 amendments to Title IX permitting public schools to separate boys and girls for academic purposes. The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of single gender education to promote gains in student academic achievement, increase attendance levels, support character development, and decrease student discipline problems. The context of this inquiry is a large public school district that incorporates single gender education applications across the district. My study is focused on an all-girls middle school and an all-boys middle school, and it demonstrates outcomes …
