Grounded Technology Integration: Visual Arts, Judi Harris, J. Camille Dempsey, Mark J. Hofer

The visual arts may bring to mind images of a painter in the studio,a sculptor working in stone, or a photographer capturing a dramatic landscape. While these modes of creative expression remain important to the study of visual arts, digital technologies—including graphic design software, image- and video-editing applications, and animation tools—provide students with new opportunities for visual-arts learning. Using these technologies alone, however, does not necessarily help students construct meaningful learning as they design, develop, and communicate their ideas visually. Instead, it is through meaningfully selecting, combining, and sequencing learning activities and complementing them with the savvy use of technological tools …

The study presented in this article examines the use of comic books, specifically the TOON comic books during guided reading instruction. The instruction was provided to struggling readers by the Literacy Center at a comprehensive university in southeastern United States. What most pre-service teachers in this study agreed upon was that comic books served as an effective tool for getting their students interested in reading. Reading comic books with tutors as partners in conversation with the struggling readers in this study was also a powerful medium for facilitating students’ literacy skills development, particularly in the areas of reading fluency and …

(Im)Possible Identity: Autoethnographic (Re)Presentations, Seungho Moon, Chris Strople

In this paper, we examine experience, identity, and their intersections. Working from an autoethnographic positionality, we investigate the insufficiencies of language and the limitations of any given researcher with an intent to address multiple realities and their respective interpretations of meaning. Autoethnographic narratives with the use of visual, written, and multimedia representations further acknowledge the dilemmas of qualitative researchers when they cannot fully describe subjectivities in research. What is deemed to be valid research is often indicative of a theoretical framework that aggressively seeks to invalidate other perspectives and ways of knowing. Thus, we create research spaces by employing counter-narratives …
The Arts Community Without Community: Imagining Aesthetic Curriculum For Active Citizenship, Seungho Moon
The Arts Community Without Community: Imagining Aesthetic Curriculum For Active Citizenship, Seungho Moon
Seungho Moon
This article is about teaching art-based inquiry and equity pedagogy. The author introduces an aesthetic-inspired afterschool curriculum in the urban context in the United States and theorizes the meaning of active citizenship and community. Conceptually framed by “community without community,” this article explicates the ways in which the ARtS children (Aesthetic, Reflexive thoughts, & Sharing) investigated the meanings of community through dance, poetry, and clay art. The author imagines and theorizes community that goes beyond emphasizing solidarity and a collective “we”-ness in the pursuit of social transformation. Rather, the author argues that “community without community” could be an important framework …
Situating Design, Gregory S. Palermo
Situating Design, Gregory S. Palermo
Gregory Palermo
This is a case study of the development of a new Core curriculum course at the Iowa State University (ISU) College of Design (CoD). It relates an overview of the creation of the course and sample learning exercises that activate a large lecture class. Historically, the CoD separated first-year students into discipline specific studies, narrowing, we believe, their perspectives about design. A Task Force analyzed learning outcomes of the first year programs, and proposed a more interdisciplinary conception of design education. The CoD committed itself to creating a Core foundation year of design studies, which students in Architecture, Landscape Architecture …
Ethical Expectations: Reflections From Beginning Architecture Students, Gregory S. Palermo
Ethical Expectations: Reflections From Beginning Architecture Students, Gregory S. Palermo

Each year several thousand recent high school graduates enter accredited professional degree programs to study architecture. They have made the decision to ‘become an architect’ early in life and arrive at university directly from high school rather than upon completion of a prior baccalaureate degree. Undoubtedly, during the final years of high school, autumn 2008 entering first-year students answered this question more than a few times: “Why do you want to study architecture?”
Private Lives And Interior Spaces: Raja Ravi Varma's Scholar Paintings, Niharika Dinkar
Private Lives And Interior Spaces: Raja Ravi Varma's Scholar Paintings, Niharika Dinkar
Niharika Dinkar
Between 1900 and 1904, the celebrated Indian academic painter Raja Ravi Varma painted two depictions of men reading (plate 1 and plate 2). The works are unusual, so much so, as to be quite unrecognizable from the mythological paintings and princely portraits that earned Ravi Varma his reputation with patrons and clients. Ravi Varma was best known for his paintings of lovelorn women gazing comely at the viewer and although men had featured in several commissioned portraits they were rarely presented as idealised figures. His sketchbooks feature several examples of men in everyday scenes, so it is evident that he …

These products reassure you that they are safe and reliable, often bearing labels such as "Mom Tested" or "Pediatrician Approved." She is the Mythic Mom: buy these products and you too may attain her state of charming, if sometimes unruly, bliss.
Suit My Heart: Staging Foster Youth Narratives That Hit Home, Michelle Hayford
Suit My Heart: Staging Foster Youth Narratives That Hit Home, Michelle Hayford
Michelle Hayford
While devising Suit My Heart, I relied upon my training in the ‘three A’s’ of performance studies conceived by my late mentor Dwight Conquergood as “artistry, analysis and activism” (2002: 152). With these ‘three A’s’ in mind, I set out to facilitate a devising process and create an artistic product that would positively serve all communities involved. The quality of the project would be determined not only by the efficacy of the play that we produced in the end, but by the personal growth of my students and the empowerment of our community partners throughout the process. Discovering the reach …

Exploring Learning Objectives For Digital Design In Architectural Education, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske
Exploring Learning Objectives For Digital Design In Architectural Education, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske
Shelby Elizabeth Doyle
: What are the objectives of teaching digital design in architecture? While this seems a rather primitive inquiry it in fact is loaded with misunderstanding and disagreement. This paper aims to bring accepted educational research about learning objectives into the discussion of digital design’s relationship to architecture. In particular, Bloom’s Taxonomy is introduced and referenced as a tool for creating clarity, transparency, and accountability among educators. The purpose of reflecting upon learning objectives for digital design in architecture is not to produce a definitive list of what students ought to learn. Learning objectives are written for specific curricula, student needs, …

Despite the growing evidence of humanity’s impact on the natural world and the urgent need to shape citizens who understand the impact that their choices and actions have on their local and global environments, colleges and universities throughout the United States have been slow to add environmental education as a core component of their undergraduate curricula. Harnessing our shared interest in environment issues and the humanities, we designed and taught an experimental course in environmental literature for the honors program at Western Michigan University that we hope will become a template of what is possible in postsecondary environmental education. Using …

The number of journals dedicated solely to the publishing of research in the fields of typography and visual communication is slowly growing. However, very little of this material finds its way back into the studio at undergraduate level. Further, research published in discipline-focussed peer-reviewed journals does ‘not tend to be highly valued by those engaged in practice.’ As a result of this, as Robin Kinross has written, ‘the academic discussion of typography, and design in general, is too often hermetic and unreal: in unholy partnership with the proud anti-intellectualism of many practicing designers’. This has a variety of consequences. In …

Examining Variations In Divergent Thinking Within Norwegian And Canadian Communities, Catharine Dishke Hondzel, Marte Sørebø Gulliksen
Catharine Dishke Hondzel
Creativity and divergent thinking are components of learning in childhood that often go unmeasured in favor of standardized subject assessments. To better understand the ways in which creativity develops and is related to environmental and cross-cultural factors, this study reports on the scores obtained by 8-year-old students living in differently sized communities in Norway and Canada measured using the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT). Results of multivariate analyses indicate statistically significant differences between Norwegian and Canadian children on several Torrance Test subscales as well as surprising relationships between the size of the community in which the children lived and …

Representing Black Power: Handling A "Revolution" In The Age Of Mass Media, Craig Peariso
Representing Black Power: Handling A "Revolution" In The Age Of Mass Media, Craig Peariso
Craig J. Peariso
After attending a Black Panther Party press conference in 1967, a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “If a Hollywood director were to choose them as stars of a movie melodrama of revolution, he would be accused of typecasting” (quoted in Moore 1971: 257). While this reporter quickly backed away from suggesting that there was anything suspicious about the Panthers’ media-friendly tactics—saying that party founders Bobby Seale and Huey Newton “are not actors and this is not Hollywood”—others were not so politic. Drama critic Robert Brustein, for example, wrote that the party’s press conferences and photo-ops suggest that their …

The model of assessment will demonstrate how to align the assessment of production activity with learning goals set by accrediting bodies, the institution, the department, and the specific program. This alignment insures that measurement of student learning is standardized across the students’ entire experience in the program (courses, performances, rehearsals, technical preparations, etc.) Examples of indirect and direct measurement instruments will be presented.
