The Impact Of The First-Year Experience On A College Student’S God Image: A Phenomenological Study, Josiah Peterson Jan 2021

The Impact Of The First-Year Experience On A College Student’S God Image: A Phenomenological Study, Josiah Peterson

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

The first year of college comes with many new experiences, including those that impact and change a student’s faith. This phenomenological study investigated how the first-year experience of students at a Midwest, faith-based, liberal arts college impacted faith development and particularly God images. Results revealed that the community around the students, the difficulties and struggles they faced, and the new perspectives they encountered led students to view God in more relational and loving ways than prior to their first year of college. The discussion introduces readers to opportunities for student development educators to engage with first-year students in their faith …

Should Universities Encourage Students To Be Undecided?: A Consideration Of Major Declaration Patterns And First-Destinations, Amber D. Stanley Jan 2021

Should Universities Encourage Students To Be Undecided?: A Consideration Of Major Declaration Patterns And First-Destinations, Amber D. Stanley

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Research on undecided students is contradictory at best. Studies both support and condemn the undecided states based on factors like persistence, changing majors, and graduation rates. Given the conflicting nature of the research on undecided students and the absence of research on undecided students and first-destinations (i.e., first jobs following graduation), it is difficult to discern whether or not institutions should actively encourage students to choose an undecided status.

This study sought to combine major declaration and first-destination data to explore what, if any, relationship exists between major declaration patterns and first-destination outcomes. Quantitative descriptive analysis was used to compare …

Let’S Talk About Sex: Healthy Sexuality Programming At Faith-Based Institutions, Kenedy M. Kieffer

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

College is a time in life where students grow and develop inside and outside of the classroom. Attitudes that students develop related to healthy sexuality should not be different from anything else learned in college, as it is a central part of who they become by the time they graduate. This research study explores the methods faith-based institutions are employing to educate students toward healthy sexuality when requiring specific sexual behavior expectations to which students adhere. These methods included institutional commitment to educating students, educating through relationships with students, specific groups being educated, and educating in curricular and co-curricular spaces …

Promoting Persistence: Faculty Of Color And The Graduation Rates Of Students Of Color At Predominantly White Institution, Serena Draper Jan 2021

Promoting Persistence: Faculty Of Color And The Graduation Rates Of Students Of Color At Predominantly White Institution, Serena Draper

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Over the last several decades, access to higher education for students of color has rapidly expanded. Yet while the population of students of color continues to grow in higher education, faculty diversity has not matched pace. This disparity creates curiosity regarding the relationship between faculty representation and persistence in college. In light of this reality, this study examined the relationship between faculty representation and graduation rates by race and ethnicity at predominantly white institutions. This study used publicly available IPEDS data to measure the 6-year graduation rates for varying racial groups and the percentage of faculty of those groups at …

Integrated Curriculum In Physical Education, Delaney M. Rice

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This paper seeks to address an absence of resources for teachers that highlight cross-curricular integration of physical education and core academics to benefit the learning, motivation, health, and academic outcomes of students. Curricular integration, or the highlighting of overlapping themes between subjects, has become a popular way to maximize educational time in schools. The benefits of curricular integration are well documented, however, less known are the benefits of curricular integration in the fields of physical education and special education. By analyzing existing literature, reviewing existing curricula and educational resources, and surveying educational professionals, a guide was created to support teachers …

Teacher Educators Learning With Prospective Teachers: Finding Relevant Mathematics In Our (Their) Lives, Lindsay M. Keazer, Eryn M. Mather Jan 2021

Teacher Educators Learning With Prospective Teachers: Finding Relevant Mathematics In Our (Their) Lives, Lindsay M. Keazer, Eryn M. Mather

Education Faculty Publications

Two mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) discuss the mathematical contexts generated by prospective teachers (PTs) when pushed to look for relevant mathematics in their lives and communities. Through collaborative teacher action research focused on iterations of collecting, categorizing, and discussing PTs’ mathematical contexts, and posing selected examples for PTs’ own examination, layers of learning occurred for both PTs and MTEs. PTs began to craft more personalized, story-like contexts, seemingly noticing more mathematics in their lives. MTEs were unexpectedly pushed to clarify their thinking about what it means to develop contexts that are authentic and relevant, and to contemplate how their actions …

Advising Black Students And Anti-Oppressive Frameworks: A Systematic Review Of College Access And College Counseling Literature, Tenisha L. Tevis, Tiffany J. Davis, Stephanie R. Perez-Gill, Tori Amason

Journal of College Access

It is well known that Black students have higher expectations for attending college than their White and non-White peers, yet consistently lag behind in degree attainment. It is important then that practitioners use differentiated approaches with and researchers offer disaggregated analyses of historically underrepresented racial/ethnic minoritized populations in the college advising process. Doing so could reveal systemic barriers to achievement and advancement that are specific, in this instance, to Black students. Since the role and practice of college advising is (or at least should be) informed by the extant literature, then a systematic review is an ideal avenue for scholarly …

Teacher Decision-Making In Guided Reading, Brittany Worthen Jan 2021

Teacher Decision-Making In Guided Reading, Brittany Worthen

Theses and Dissertations--Curriculum and Instruction

Guided reading provides teachers the opportunity to support students in literacy learning. When planning for and implementing this instructional approach, teachers are required to make various in-advance and in-the-moment decisions that involve responding to students’ instructional needs through adaptive teaching. Grounded in sociocultural and social constructivist theories, this study was designed to understand teacher decision-making within the context of guided reading instruction. Several questions were considered for this study: How do teachers make decisions about guided reading instruction? How do teachers make in-advance decisions about grouping, planning, and assessing? How do teachers make in-the-moment decisions about (a) feedback and support …

The Effects Of Systematic Manipulation Of Reinforcement Within A Classroom Management System, Amanda Gayle Chavez Jan 2021

The Effects Of Systematic Manipulation Of Reinforcement Within A Classroom Management System, Amanda Gayle Chavez

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

Research suggests that best practice is for teachers to incorporate evidence-based classroom management strategies into their daily routines to improve student behavior. One aspect crucial to evidence-based practices is the rate at which teachers deliver reinforcement. Though research recommends reinforcement be provided frequently within classroom management systems (Robacker et al., 2016), no objective recommendation exists that assists teachers in delivering it systematically. In this study, a single case withdrawal design was used to analyze the effects of the systematic delivery of reinforcement within ClassDojo on the off-task behavior of three students in a fifth-grade general education classroom. The participating teacher …
