Literature And Film: Preparing Students For A Media-Centric Future, Mike Landers

This project addresses the issue of preparing 21st century students to be critical thinkers and media-literate individuals in the consistently evolving world. This project first examines the changing nature of our media-centered society and current uses of film in the English Language Arts classroom as an effective instructional tool. Afterwards, a curriculum for an elective class that integrates film study alongside literature analysis is then presented as a resource for teachers. This class specifically uses young-adult films for film study as a way to enhance instruction and develop the skills needed to effectively read, analyze, and discuss literature.

The purpose of the study was to obtain consensus concerning the defining characteristics of integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum. The purpose of this quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group study was to test theories of constructivism and motivation, along with research-based teaching practices of differentiating instruction and instructing within a child's Zone of Proximal Development, in measuring the effect of computer-aided instruction on fifth grade students' attitude and achievement in math. Students in Pennsylvania completed an attitude survey at the beginning, middle, and end of the study (Pierce, Stacey & Barkatsas, 2007). Inter-institutional collaborations are starting to occur with greater frequency. Collaboration allows institutions to leverage resources to best advantage and produces the opportunity for creativity and innovation. As examples: colleges may offer foreign language classes jointly to enroll enough students to be cost effective; universities may partner with non-profits to create rich experiential learning environments. This study surveyed current third-, fourth- and fifth-grade teachers in two small school districts in the southeast. One school district has initiated a technology initiative in its elementary schools. The other school district involved in the study incorporates technology but does not have a specified technology initiative. Recent research demonstrates the expectation of the use of technology in schools. Advances in technology often require teachers to learn new methods of teaching while trying to keep up with rapidly increasing technological changes.
