Nurse Educators' Experiences Of Student Remediation, Holly A Dever
Nurse Educators' Experiences Of Student Remediation, Holly A Dever
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Little is known about the nurse educator's experiences in remediating novice undergraduate nursing students who failed an exam early in the program of study. While numerous strategies have been used by faculty for remediation, no evidence-based methodology for student remediation has been identified in published literature. The aim of this study was to build a foundation of qualitative research on nurse educators' experiences in the remediation of a student who failed an exam. This basic qualitative study, guided by Smith and Liehr's story theory, explored the nurse educator's experiences with remediation using interview data collected from six nurse educators. Interviews …

Online Textbook Use And Online Student Success Rates In Community College, Diane M. Hilbert
Online Textbook Use And Online Student Success Rates In Community College, Diane M. Hilbert
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Online student success rates in community colleges have continued to fall below student success rates for their on-campus counterparts. The purpose of this causal-comparative quantitative study was to determine the difference in student success between students who used a hardcopy textbook for an online U.S. history course and students who used an online textbook at an urban community college in Texas while also investigating the influence of gender and ethnicity. Secondary data collected included final course grades from the course over a 10-year period with 9,115 students. The theoretical foundation focused on the deliberate construction of online course design and …
Minority Student Growth And Development In A Rural 4-Year College, Aisha Hall
Minority Student Growth And Development In A Rural 4-Year College, Aisha Hall
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
At a Mid-Atlantic, 4-year, rural, higher education institution, the minority student population, 25%, is growing compared to the 9% of minority faculty representation. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of minority faculty and students regarding student learning associated with minority students’ relationships to minority faculty. Critical race theory was used as part of the conceptual framework which provides a narrative on the perspectives of race and dispels myths, racial beliefs, and misrepresentations of the truth. Social learning theory was also used as part of the conceptual framework because it explains how social influences impact the beliefs …
Influence Of Administrators Support On Third Grade Student Behavior In Schools, Alicia Vink
Influence Of Administrators Support On Third Grade Student Behavior In Schools, Alicia Vink
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research indicated that teachers' perceptions of administrator support behaviors, behavioral interventions, and students' classroom behaviors have a strong connection to students' academic outcomes. A lack of administrator support practices present challenges to teachers' effectiveness and students' academic and social success. The purpose of this quantitative study was to address the relationships among teachers' perceptions of administrator support, the FAST (Families and Schools Together) behavioral intervention program, and teachers' perceptions of student classroom behavior. Spillane's distributed leadership theory was used as a framework. The data were a subset of archival data from a target population of approximately 200 teachers working at …

Perceptions, Lived-Experiences, And Environmental Factors Impacting The Crime-Reporting Practices Of Private College Students, Kelly Lynn Arney
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this study was assessing the perceptions of student's on how the campus climate impacts their likelihood of reporting crime. Victimization studies have been conducted at large universities and community colleges; however, there remains a lack of research regarding private colleges. This study was designed to examine the reasoning behind students' crime-reporting behaviors and the influencers that impact their decisions. Cohen and Felson's routine activity theory along with the collective-efficacy theory were used as frameworks to analyze the crimes that occur to college students as well as to explore the reasons for not reporting some crimes to law …
Academic Entitlement And The Decision-Making Of Tenured Professors, A. Roland Chambers
Academic Entitlement And The Decision-Making Of Tenured Professors, A. Roland Chambers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Academic entitlement is a concern in higher education because of the potential societal and market driven influences on credible scholarship. Most of the research has focused on negative attitudes and behaviors attributed to students. The considerations of tenured professors who interact with academically entitled students and strategies for effective classroom management has not been fully explored. Constructivism provided the theoretical framework for the qualitative case study. Data were collected from open-ended, semistructured interviews with a purposeful sample of 10 tenured professors from a state college in the Southeastern United States to explore (a) the meanings participants attributed to academic entitlement, …

Kenya's Constituency Development Fund, Free Secondary Education Policy, And Access To Secondary Education, Charles Kyalo Nzuki
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The effects of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and the Free Secondary Education Policy (FSEP) on access to secondary school education in Kenya's Yatta sub-county have not been adequately explored in available public policy literature. Hence, this qualitative multiple-case study was designed to understand the effects of the 2 policies on both enrollment and dropout among secondary school age children in Yatta. The study was conducted in 1 mixed-boarding secondary school and 1 secondary day school in Yatta. The study was built on an adapted Huisman and Smits' theoretical model on dropout among students in developing countries. The data were …
Oversight And Quality Assurance Of Academic Programs Under F-1 Visas, Faye Janine Pleso
Oversight And Quality Assurance Of Academic Programs Under F-1 Visas, Faye Janine Pleso
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An F-1 academic visa is required for foreign students studying at academic institutions in the United States. While requirements for acquiring the F-1 visa are a matter of federal policy, some of the principles regulating orientations, host families, and home-stays do not align with best practices found at the university level, which include quality student orientations and thorough trainings with a vetting process for host families and home-stays. This lack of regulation may place visiting students at risk in terms of personal safety and wellbeing and have negative impacts for program credibility and lost revenue. Using Stone's regime theory as …
The Use Of Online Supplemental Materials In College Courses To Improve Retention, Amy Lynn Hennings
The Use Of Online Supplemental Materials In College Courses To Improve Retention, Amy Lynn Hennings
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
First-generation college students continue to have lower retention and success rates in colleges and universities, reducing their likelihood of staying above the poverty line. The study tested Bandura and Vygotsky's social cognitive theories of self-efficacy, self-regulation, and student ability to self-pace in the classroom. The purpose of this study was to explore if offering supplemental online materials to traditional class delivery, which can be self-regulated and self-paced, impacted students' success rates in the class and semester-to-semester retention. Using a quasi-experimental method, first-semester college students, in a small private liberal arts college (N = 678); were compared on use of supplemental …

The conceptual framework of this study, social constructivism, provided a foundation to better understand the role each administrator plays in this social group.
