Does Spanish bilingualism have measurable fiscal value in the U.S. construction industry? Studying and becoming proficient in Spanish is feasible, affordable, and can be accomplished at Cal Poly in conjunction with a Construction Management major. In a dynamic industry that values versatile employees, where communication is key to success, the capability of speaking Spanish is a substantial value-add in the workforce. Using qualitative and quantitative data analysis, it is concluded that individuals who possess English and Spanish-speaking abilities in the U.S. construction industry can expect a 3 percent wage premium when compared to English-only speakers. Teacher pay in Arkansas public schools varies widely from district to district across the state. This pay discrepancy is driven by both the funds available to a district and by how these funds are allocated. There is a standard per student budget given to districts across the state, but this budget can be supplemented by additional property taxes collected on property within a district. This leaves districts with more highly valued property at an advantage. Proficiency Appraisal: A Viable Alternative To Merit Pay, Kenneth T. Pietraniec

An original design of an incentive plan to reward and encourage instructional proficiency was developed. The evaluative criteria is based on findings of current research in effective instruction. Students, colleagues, administrators, and a trained outside observer appraise behaviors in the domains of classroom climate, time on task, management of student conduct, and teacher expectations. A proficiency grid rates and maps the collected data. Proficiency point totals determine monetary reward and identify professional development needs.

It was the purpose of this paper to bring to light some advantages of teaching in the State of Washington not directly tied to salaries, but certainly affecting the amount of disposable income the teacher will have after paying certain rather fixed expenses, both during his active teaching career and after retirement.
