The History And Work Of The Centre For Early Childhood Development And Education (Cecde) (2001-2008), Elizabeth Dunphy Dr, Maire Mhic Mhathuna
Articles
Growing international interest in ECEC policy in the 1990s resulted in increasing awareness of its significance for education policy in Ireland. Arising from this, in 1999, Ready to Learn: A White Paper for Early Childhood Education was published. This led to the establishment of the Centre for Early Childhood Development and Education (CECDE). This chapter charts in chronological order the history and work of the CECDE from its inception in 2001 until its closure in 2008. It documents the governance, structures, strategic direction and management of the Centre. It foregrounds the outputs of the Centre including research reports, international conferences …

Is Qualitative Research In Education Being Lost In Spain? Analysis And Reflections On The Problems Arising From Generating Knowledge Hegemonically, Manuel Fernández-Navas, Noelia Alcaraz-Salarirche, Laura Pérez-Granados, Ana Yara Postigo-Fuentes
The Qualitative Report
In this paper we reflect on how qualitative research in education in Spain has become invisible, by asking a series of questions. What are the effects of this? What are the keys to understand this marginalisation of qualitative research? What are the implications for researchers and students? What challenges does qualitative research face in order to overcome this lack of visibility? To discuss these issues, we present a series of structured reflections in the form of an essay based on the preliminary impressions that have emerged in the course of a broader investigation that we are conducting and that focuses …

Online Training To Prepare Counselors For Online Counseling: Newstrategies And Tools, Troyann I. Gentile, Leping Liu
Troyann I. Gentile
This paper will present our experiences to design and implement an online training unit to prepare school counseling majors for online counseling. The experiences focus on two parts: (a) the design of the online training, and (b) the design of online counseling. Based on a technology-integration model and the traditional ADDIE instructional design model, new strategies that cooperate with the online environment and current Web 2.0 tools and applications are developed and applied into the online training and online counseling. Strategies, tools, issues and some useful tips will be discussed.

Goats, Crayons And Bananas – Creative Ways To Fight Student Stress, Conny Liegl
Goats, Crayons And Bananas – Creative Ways To Fight Student Stress, Conny Liegl
Conny Liegl
More than 80% of US college students report feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, almost half of whom describe their academic experience as traumatic or very difficult to handle. Stress, sleep difficulties and anxiety are just some of the symptoms that manifest in college students. Undergraduates seem particularly susceptible to these stressors, but only one in five seeks medical consultation for their issues. (American College Health Association [ACHA], 2013)
To help students react to external and internal stressors, California Polytechnic State University’s Robert E. Kennedy Library initiated a program to support students during the most stressful times of the academic quarter. With …
Formative Assessment In Seven Good Moves, Brent M. Duckor
Formative Assessment In Seven Good Moves, Brent M. Duckor
Brent M. Duckor
The research is clear: What teachers do in their classrooms matters. But which practices really make a difference? John Hattie (2012) conducted an extensive meta-analysis, looking at 800 meta-analyses that focused on locating a specific student achievement outcome and identifying an influence on that outcome. Formative assessment topped his list of the most influential practices that improve student outcomes. What makes formative assessment so effective? It depends on whom you talk to. Although experts tell us that formative assessment is one of the most powerful ways to raise student achievement (Black & Wiliam, 1998), we don't always know which practices …
