Under a National Science Foundation (NSF) Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) grant, the Research Scholars Program was developed at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University — Worldwide. The objective of the Research Scholars Program is to promote undergraduate research for the online students at the Worldwide campus and to formalize the process in which the students can participate in research. A significant aspect of the project was to create a support network for the students that incorporated existing services provided by the university and established new services to aid students throughout their mentored research experience. There are various barriers facing adult students and veterans completing engineering degrees. Many of these student’s work part- or full-time while in college. In order to help these students, enable high retention rates, and decrease time to graduation require an in-depth understanding of specific student populations, especially ones classified as underrepresented. This paper provides an initial look into the first year of a scholarship program, funded by the National Science Foundation, and student success activities designed to support high-achieving, low-income students with demonstrated financial need pursuing bachelor's degrees in engineering and engineering technology. Dr. Nathan Reyna, Ouachita Baptist University’s associate professor of biology, has been selected to participate in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) mentor program, CURE Net.

Dr. Reyna will have the opportunity to serve as a mentor to other science professors in the country and teach them how to run course-embedded undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) in their own institutions. This program mirrors several programs Ouachita’s J.D. Patterson School of Natural Sciences already sponsors, which is among the reasons Dr. Reyna was invited to participate.
