New teachers felt unprepared as they entered their first year of teaching and were leaving the teaching field at a high rate every school year. Tennessee, like many other states, had a critical shortage of secondary mathematics teachers. Secondary mathematics has been considered a high-needs subject area. New teacher induction programs were developed to help support new teachers and aid in their retention; however, the state of Tennessee did not have a requirement for mentoring or induction support for new teachers. Disadvantaged students (i.e., students characterized by first generation status, low socio-economic status, or racial minority) in the United States enrolled in college at higher rates but still faced a significant college graduation gap. Research has shown that a close, personal relationship with a mentor can increase the social capital of disadvantaged students in post-secondary education. The Tennessee Promise Program was a scholarship program for high school students, designed to remove the financial barriers while also supplying them with an adult mentor to guide them through the college process. This study investigated the mentoring functions and the supervisory relationships of 20 preservice and cooperating teacher-dyads in student teaching. Utilizing three instruments, Mentoring Functions, Supervisory Relationship Measure (SRM), and Supervisory Relationship Questionnaire (SRQ), the compatibility of their mentoring perceptions, their level of satisfaction within their supervisory relationship, and the possible relatedness between the two were examined. The analyses of the results indicated that the mentoring perceptions of the dyads were highly compatible/congruent, with the highest degree of compatibility in the subscales of Advocacy and Role Modeling.
