Exploring Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students’ Identities In An Afterschool Book Club, Yu-Chi Wang May 2016

Exploring Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students’ Identities In An Afterschool Book Club, Yu-Chi Wang

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative research aims to investigate identity positions of elementary school students with culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) background in an afterschool book club. The increasing population of CLD students and their learning needs have become a national focus in American schools. Scholars have highlighted that understanding students’ identity positions and their interactions in social communities benefits teaching practices (Norton, 2013). Although the number of studies investigating identity in language and literacy education is increasing, most focus on English language learners (ELLs) who are currently enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) or ELL programs and few examine these ...

The Possibilities Of Public Literacy Spaces: Homeless Veterans (And Other Adults) Draft Nonfiction And Selves Inside A Community Writing Workshop, Rossina Zamora Liu May 2015

The Possibilities Of Public Literacy Spaces: Homeless Veterans (And Other Adults) Draft Nonfiction And Selves Inside A Community Writing Workshop, Rossina Zamora Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Deficits dominate our culture's narratives of homelessness, associating poverty with lower literacy and skewing social policies about access and equity in schools, jobs, healthcare, and community (Bomer, 2008; Miller, 2011; Miller, 2014; Moore, 2013). Scant, if any, literature exists about literacy and identity in homeless adults, in ways that they might enroll in college and/or seek long-term careers. Yet if one of our roles as educators is to advocate for justice and disrupt social apathy, then we ought to consider more studies identifying literacy strengths (Barton & Hamilton, 1998; Bomer, 2008; Janks, 2010; Miller, 2011, 2014; Moore, 2013) of marginalized groups ...

"Get Up And Get On": Literacy, Identity Work And Stories In The Lives Of Families Residing At A Homeless Shelter, Mary Margaret Jacobs May 2013

"Get Up And Get On": Literacy, Identity Work And Stories In The Lives Of Families Residing At A Homeless Shelter, Mary Margaret Jacobs

Theses and Dissertations

In this qualitative research study, I examine the literacy practices of five families who resided in a homeless shelter with attention to the complexity of literacy as it is taken up for fulfilling cultural and social goals within families, neighborhoods, and communities. Literacy is complicated through the lens of literacy sponsorship (Brandt, 2001) to suggest the differential access people have to literacy and the power sponsors have to sanction particular forms of literacy while dismissing existing literacies that families use in their everyday lives, but are undervalued in schools and the marketplace. Data collected from parent interviews and a family ...

Learning, Knowing, And Doing Classroom Assessment: Exposure And Understanding Rates Of Assessment Knowledge Among Elementary Pre-Service Teachers, Martin Swen Moe Jul 2012

Learning, Knowing, And Doing Classroom Assessment: Exposure And Understanding Rates Of Assessment Knowledge Among Elementary Pre-Service Teachers, Martin Swen Moe

Theses and Dissertations

The use of assessments and assessment results is critical to classroom instruction. Teachers use the information gathered from assessments to guide instruction within their classrooms and to otherwise inform their judgment in areas of the curriculum requiring individual and group-based responsiveness and differentiation.

Much time and care go into preparing teachers to be able to instruct from the standpoint of a specific content area and age level. Unfortunately, this preparation does not always extend itself to understanding various assessment practices. The teaching of assessment practices should be a common experience in teacher education programs. This study aimed to determine what ...

Haunting Moments In Technocontexts: A Framework For Understanding The Emergence Of Power, Identities, And Emotions, Lindsay Nicole Laurich Jul 2012

Haunting Moments In Technocontexts: A Framework For Understanding The Emergence Of Power, Identities, And Emotions, Lindsay Nicole Laurich

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses a series of disconcerting moments that emerged during a research study with seven fourth and fifth grade students who participated in an after-school Technology Think Tank and their classroom teachers at a Midwestern elementary school. These moments were marked by heightened power, identity performances, and emotions and were disturbing not only as they occurred, but remained bothersome upon reflection in the days and weeks afterwards. In this research I call them ‘haunting moments.'

The primary data sources for this research were audio and video files that I initially analyzed for volume. This process verified my premise that ...

Critical Literacy And The World Language Classroom: Complicating Culture Education, Anah Victoria Malamut Jul 2011

Critical Literacy And The World Language Classroom: Complicating Culture Education, Anah Victoria Malamut

Theses and Dissertations

There is a struggle within the field of world language teaching to design culture curricula that promote respect, acceptance and understanding of world cultures, positioning those cultures as different but equal to the cultures of students.
