The early skills of Emergent Literacy include the knowledge and abilities related to the alphabet, phonological awareness, symbolic representation, and communication. However, existing models of emergent literacy focus on discrete skills and miss the perspective of the surrounding environment. Supporting Students In Transition Through The Use Of Touchstone Texts For Literacy Instruction, Deanna Laverick, Kelly Heider

This articled describes ways in which teachers may use young adult and children's literature as touchstone texts to enhance children's  ability to successfully navigate the transition process and develop literacy skills. An overview of the transition process is shared before turning to a discussion on the relationship between transitions and literacy. A bibliography of literature with themes related to topics surrounding transitions is included as a resource for educators. The article also provides a variety of instructional techniques that use touchstone texts to engage students in response to transition-related literature in order to promote growth in literacy.
