The Relation Between Speech And Reading, Erin St. Jacques
The Relation Between Speech And Reading, Erin St. Jacques
Honors Projects
An analysis is made of the connection between speech and reading, and language and reading, and how both are related to a Speech-Language Pathologist's job in a school setting, working with struggling readers. Research about the process of learning how to read and how and SLP can be brought in at different stages is examined. This research paper looks at how a child learns to read; programs were executed involving young readers with reading disabilities. It also examines the different stages of learning to read and how an SLP can try to hep. The tactics were examined more closely as …
The Development Of A P-20 Educational Campus: A Case Study On Innovation, Richard R. Patterson
The Development Of A P-20 Educational Campus: A Case Study On Innovation, Richard R. Patterson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tyack & Tobin (1994, p. 454) describe that the “grammar of schooling,” like the shape of classrooms, has remained remarkably stable over the decades. This has frustrated generations of reformers who have fought to change standardized organizational traditions. Typically school reform has taken the form of innovations in education. Unfortunately, educational innovations don't usually last long or they were never truly innovations in the first place but rather a repackaging or reintroduction of age-old customary practices.
The “Eos Public Schools” set out on a mission to integrate P-20 educational reform into its overall school system as a way to confront …

A Process For Transition To Sustainability: Implementation, Sandra Wooltorton, Marilyn Palmer, Fran Steele
Research outputs 2011
This paper reports the outcomes of the second action cycle of an ongoing project at Edith Cowan University (ECU) called "Transition to Sustainability: ECU South West" which is located in a small, single faculty regional university campus. The overall project has comprised three action research cycles, the first of which was the planning cycle which established the importance of building a community of practice with a learning stance for sustainability transition. It also highlighted the issue of a common definition of the term sustainability; of including cross-disciplinary perspectives; and of working with the local community. The second action cycle which …

Causal Effects Of Single-Sex Schools On College Entrance Exams And College Attendance: Random Assignment In Seoul High Schools, Hyunjoon Park, Jere R. Behrman, Jaesung Choi
Causal Effects Of Single-Sex Schools On College Entrance Exams And College Attendance: Random Assignment In Seoul High Schools, Hyunjoon Park, Jere R. Behrman, Jaesung Choi
Hyunjoon Park
Despite the voluminous literature on the potentials of single-sex schools, there is no consensus on the effects of single-sex schools because of student selection of school types. We exploit a unique feature of schooling in Seoul, the random assignment of students into single-sex versus coeducational high schools, to assess causal effects of single-sex schools on college entrance exam scores and college attendance. Our validation of the random assignment shows comparable socioeconomic backgrounds and prior academic achievement of students attending single-sex schools and coeducational schools, which increases the credibility of our causal estimates of single-sex school effects. Attending all-boys schools or …

The Relationship Between Assistive Technology State Standards For Teachers, Assistive Technology Implementation, And Student Performance In The Context Of Evidence-Based Practice, Elizabeth M. Dalton
Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview
Identifies, through a national survey, states' formally-adopted assistive technology standards for teachers, the evidence on which these standards were based, and the extent of state support for the implementation of these standards by teachers. Applies descriptive analysis to the data collected for these three areas of study and compares the results with national performance measures for students with disabilities via regression analysis.
Exploring The Teaching Mind: Extending Participation In Lifelong Learning Through Engagement With A Supportive Community, Jeremy Szteiter
Exploring The Teaching Mind: Extending Participation In Lifelong Learning Through Engagement With A Supportive Community, Jeremy Szteiter
Jeremy Szteiter
This paper extends the notion of lifelong learning beyond gaining knowledge over a lifetime to preparing oneself to teach what has been learned to others. The "Teaching Mind," as I define the idea, involves thinking about what has been learned and what one knows by reconsidering that knowledge through the eyes of self as a teacher. The Teaching Mind assumes a broad notion of teaching that relates to informal and community learning across all areas of life and culture, beyond professional teaching in formal schools. The pursuit of the Teaching Mind is highly accessible to all those who wish to …

Language And Graffiti Of Exceptional Individuals In West Africa, Dr Williams Emeka Obiozor
Language And Graffiti Of Exceptional Individuals In West Africa, Dr Williams Emeka Obiozor
Dr Williams Emeka Obiozor
This paper establishes the place of language and graffiti practiced by exceptional individuals in the interpretation of family values, the preservation of culture and traditional heritage of the Igbo community in Southeastern Nigeria. The paper also takes a cursory look at graffiti art and exceptionality in a time when the Igbo tradition and culture were highly respected, jealously guarded and deep-rooted in the heart and soul of its people. Graffiti creations by exceptional individuals transfer both oral and visual education to documented tradition; for societal knowledge and awareness, individual wisdom, expressions against repression, pride and recognition of Igbo language and …

Location, Relocation, Dislocation Learning Cultures Or Cultures Of Learning?, Paul Armstrong
Adult Education Research Conference
Following a recent organizational relocation, the impact on the teaching and learning became evident. In analyzing the impact of change, the most useful way of understanding the change was to utilize the postmodern concepts of location and (dis)location, and to consider using anthropological research techniques to identify cultures of learning.

Examining The Catholic Intellectual Tradition: Issues And Perspectives, Anthony J. Cernera, Oliver J. Morgan, Ed.
Sacred Heart University Press Books
This volume continues and expands on the conversations in Volume 1 about the vitality, influence and contemporary relevance of the Catholic intellectual tradition. The particular concern of this volume is to explore what it means to imbue that tradition in the day-to-day life at Catholic colleges and universities. Contributions focus on such topics as the responsibilities of being stewards of the Catholic intellectual tradition, the challenges and rewards of learning and teaching within that tradition, current perceptions of Catholic identity in academia and the ongoing task of harmonizing faith and reason.

Examining The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed., Oliver J. Morgan, Ed.
Sacred Heart University Press Books
This collection of essays by a variety of educators, scholars, and theologians lays out some of the content behind the term "Catholic intellectual tradition," a tradition that is both a treasury of classic and contemporary texts, including religious and aesthetic products, and a "way of doing things" borne of experience, prayer, and critical reflection. Contributions focus on such topics as the ideal of the Catholic mind, the relationship between Catholicism and other faith traditions, notions of the Catholic artist and intellectual, and future directions for Catholic universities.
Thoughts And Feelings Of A Beginning Tertiary Group Of Adult Learners In A Human Resource Development Course, Bryan W. Smith
Thoughts And Feelings Of A Beginning Tertiary Group Of Adult Learners In A Human Resource Development Course, Bryan W. Smith
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This is a study of a case of adults entering tertiary study for the first time, and their mental life concerning their own self-performance, constructed across four instances. The purposes of the study were to identify some characteristics of the four participants’ covert behaviour during their learning in a course on Human Resource Development (1-IRD), to gain some insight into the conception of self-performance held by the participants and the attributions of this self-performance, to examine the approaches to learning held by each participant, and to contribute to closing the gap between adult education and educational psychology. Three consecutive three-hour …
Transfer Of Learning Between Related And Less Related Tasks Using Content Specific And Content General Learning Strategies, Ronald W. Collins
Transfer Of Learning Between Related And Less Related Tasks Using Content Specific And Content General Learning Strategies, Ronald W. Collins
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study compared learning strategies in an effort to determine which strategy would be most beneficial to transfer of learning. A number of approaches were suggested in the related literature for maximizing learning, one of which was to use "learning how to learn," also known by the term content general learning strategy. This study hypothesized that the use of content general learning strategies would produce more transfer of learning across both related and less related tasks than content specific learning strategies. Both learning strategies were combined with either a visual and semantic method of encoding or a semantic only method …
