This paper represents a one year study of the steps taken to devise and implement an English as a Second Language (ESL) program at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. The study involves analyzing the teaching / learning environment; designing, implementing and evaluating the program; and analyzing the results for future programs of this nature. The paper focuses on the intermediate and advanced ESL student and includes suggestions for materials development at each particular level. Adult Illiteracy And Literacy Volunteers: A Report Of The Efforts Of One Organization To Alleviate The Problem Of Adult Illiteracy In The United States, Marilyn Mcgillen

Adult illiteracy in the United States is a grave national problem. One organization attempting to solve this problem is Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc., a private, non-profit organization with affiliates in nineteen states. A tutorial approach to instruction through the use of volunteers trained in teaching basic reading to adults on a one-to-one basis is the method employed in this effort. Volunteers are trained in an 18-hour workshop highlighting four basic techniques and their effective utilization: experience story, sight words, phonics, and phonics-in-pattern. In-services, follow-up sessions, and consultations with volunteer reading specialists are available to tutors. A tutor training manual …

This paper is meant to serve as a handbook for learning a new language without formal instruction. It started from notes perapared for students in the intensive foreign language classes at the School for International Training who wanted to know what they could do, without taking a formal course, to optimize their continued learning once they got overseas.
