Abstract

This Creative Component Portfolio reflects the knowledge and skills about literacy and literacy leadership I have gained as a result of completing the Master of Education Program with an emphasis in literacy. The International Literacy Association’s Standards for Reading Professionals guided my selection of artifacts and reflections. The six standards encompass foundational knowledge, curriculum, instruction, assessment and evaluation, diversity, literacy and leadership. The studies included in this dissertation were completed for the purposes of exploring the nature of learning object (LO) use in introductory statistics classrooms and providing information about the quality of existing, freely-accessible online statistics LOs. Publication-ready manuscripts were written to describe the procedures and outcomes of each study. The first paper summarizes the results of a survey of LO use completed by high school and post-secondary statistics educators. This dissertation is an effort to demonstrate the design engineering of three multimedia instructional programs. It presents the design studies of three multimedia applications that combine both the effect of multimedia and instructional strategies used in these applications. It contributes to a reasoned and researched set of principles that can be applied effectively using a variety of media in a variety of settings. The evaluation of these multimedia applications conducted in real classrooms allows the researcher to derive instructional principles that are both grounded in theory and supported by evidence from authentic tasks.

This research was comprised of a case study conducted at Grand View University to determine faculty perceptions and perspectives of outcomes related to a Title III grant-funded, professional development program. The conceptual framework for the study was based on a systematic process called the logic model (W. K. Kellogg Foundation, 2004). A goal-free evaluation technique developed by Scriven in 1972 (Scriven, 1974) was the method utilized for conducting a utilization-focused evaluation (Patton, 1997).
