Environment And Affect: Toward An Emotional Geography Of Student Persistence, Jamison R. Miller, Michael Donlan

The William & Mary Educational Review

Student persistence is a perennial problem for higher education. From lost revenue for colleges and universities to lost opportunity and development for students, educational scholars have had much incentive to examine the problem. In this paper, we review some of the prominent assessments of student persistence in research from various theoretical perspectives. Further, we explore how scholars have studied environmental factors in persistence and to a lesser extent student affect, yet we find the relationship between these two to be only lightly engaged in the literature. Teaching With Tables: A Case Study Investigating Affective And Psychomotor Responses In High School Students And Teachers, Johanna Herndon

This exploratory, collective case study investigated the affective and psychomotor conditions in high school students and teachers when tables and chairs were used in classrooms instead of traditional desks. The experiences of students, teachers, and administrators were examined by investigating attitudes toward the educational process, student and teacher self-efficacy, community-building, and classroom environmental dynamics. Students (n=59) and teachers (n=3) from three classrooms (language arts, math, and social studies) in a Southeastern public high school served as participants. Background: Moderate-vigorous physical activity (%MVPA) confers beneficial effects on child musculoskeletal health, cardiovascular fitness, and psychosocial well-being; in contrast, sedentary time (%SED) is emerging as a risk factor for health. This study aimed to identify parental, child and neighborhood factors influencing longitudinal assessments of body mass index (BMI) and activity patterns among Latino children, and to estimate lagged and cross-lagged effects between child BMI, %MVPA and %SED.

The global impact of demanding environmental concerns is visible in almost all contexts of contemporary communication and across geographical borders. An increasing range of multimodal texts surface continuously in various media in order to facilitate public understanding of irreversible environmental changes, to educate future generations in ecoliteracy, to promote green or disclose greenwashed corporate images and practices, or to entertain and facilitate appropriate actions as well as responses. Substituting the words higher education for the word elephant reveals a similar state of affairs. The very existence of university and college campuses is threatened by the rise of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) and industry-designed and operated vocational training. Would-be prospective students are questioning the value of higher education. There are no guarantees that university (as opposed to TAFE) education will lead to careers that are more satisfying and with higher salaries.
