Professional development (PD) plays an important role in one’s ability to perform at a high level in a job (Mizell, 2010). Inquiry-based learning is a lauded approach in the teaching of English language. However, studies based on some IB PYP Schools indicate that teachers still face challenges in the teaching of English, using the inquiry approach, whereas learners face difficulties in reading, writing and problem solving. This case study, therefore, explored how English teachers used the inquiry-based framework in the teaching of English language at the IB PYP School, in Tanzania. This research-work aims at studying the use of metadiscourse markers by foreign learners of Arabic to enhance their writing skills. First there is an introduction which explains the role of metadiscourse markers in writing within the framework of the two paradigms of meaning suggested by Halliday, i.e. the textual and the interspersonal. Second two hypotheses on which the research-work is built are spelled out. Integration of content-based instruction into an English curriculum based on communicative goals is suggested to better solve the problems of materials and syllabus design in Taiwan. Historical antecedents and the rationales for content-based instruction are reviewed to illustrate a modern perspective on the interwoven relationship between language and content learning. The project proposes a three-year content-based English program for Taiwan's elementary and preschool students. A first year curriculum and model lessons for mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts are presented.

Introductory statement. This study represents the development of an in-service program of teaching language arts in the elementary grades and the development of an acceptable scope and plan to be followed in the teaching of language arts in the Ripon Elementary School. One of the major purposes of in-service education is the development of common values and goals in the staff of a school--a group which must work co-operatively over a period of time. The Ripon Elementary School staff, through review of the present curriculum, considered language arts to be one area which required further study
