Each year the NCSS Notable Trade Book Committee selects “books that emphasize human relations, represent a diversity of groups and are sensitive to a broad range of cultural experiences, present an original theme or a fresh slant on a traditional topic, are easily readable and of high literary quality, and have a pleasing format and, when appropriate, illustrations that enrich the text. Critical pedagogy has the power to transform learning experiences for all students, but also create seismic impacts on the futures of students; however, critical approaches to designing and implementing instruction in which digital technologies are integrated eludes many elementary teachers. Pedagogy is formed and evolves a lifetime of experiences and is never fully mastered. This study/survey was born from the construct that social inequities have a long history in the United States and beyond, impacting our social, historical, and cultural growth, and our ability to create a welcoming community. This is a continuation of a study begun at another institution and will add to our understanding of how best to support teacher candidates in their preparation and development as advocates. This study uses a pre-post survey design using purposive sampling of teacher candidates in an elementary writing methods course.

Primary grade mathematics education sets the stage for whether students excel or struggle in mathematics in their later school years. Thus, models for teaching mathematics as well as strategies for helping students overcome math anxiety are important concepts for teachers' pedagogical development. Many people are unaware of the variety of methodologies available for teaching math and their benefits. It is important to educate teachers and parents about the various techniques and structures available, so they can make educated decisions about how best to educate students mathematically. What your eyes take-in and report to your brain is not necessarily exactly what you have seen. The eye is an important sensory organ allowing for vision but without light, vision is impossible. This session will engage participants in elementary lessons that introduce the physics of color and light and illustrate various aspects of human visual perception. Properties of light will be investigated by mixing the primary light colors (not pigments) and simple tests will be performed to measure peripheral vision and explore depth perception, pupil constriction/dilation, and the blind spot.
