The problem was to determine certain factors which are perceived to limit the freedom superintendents have to implement change effectively. The purpose of the study was to determine the degree of autonomy with which superintendents in Tennessee may effectively make decisions regarding educational change. There are 138 public school superintendents, of which 132 (96%) participated in this study. The research was of a descriptive nature and utilized data gathered from a survey instrument constructed by the researcher. A questionnaire developed by Dr. John T. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in visionary leadership between and among elementary school principals and managers of manufacturing corporations in Northeast Tennessee. A second purpose was to ascertain if there was a relationship between visionary leadership and organizational climate. Data from this study were collected from 26 elementary schools and 24 manufacturing corporations. The research participants completed two questionnaires: Leader Behavior Questionnaire-Visionary Leadership, 3rd. Edition and Managerial Mirror: A Climate Inventory. This study examines the 21 competency domains of the National Policy Board of Educational Administration (NPBEA) and their importance in a collaborative effort like Cities in Schools (CIS). The purpose of the study was to identify the knowledge and skills which school principals need to facilitate an integrated service model. Data were compiled from a survey mailed to 195 CIS principals in the southeastern region of the United States. The problem of this study was to determine differences between parent perceptions of the actual and ideal amounts of involvement of parents, teachers and principals in decision-making at the elementary school level. This study was conducted in conjunction with two parallel studies that considered principal and teacher perceptions with the same hypotheses. The problem of this study was to determine if differences existed in the perceptions of elementary school principals regarding the amount of involvement parents, teachers, and principals had in school decision making. The study was one part of a more comprehensive project conducted in the First Tennessee Developmental District which also investigated parents' and teachers' perceptions of involvement. A questionnaire was developed to survey principals' perceptions of the actual and ideal level of involvement of parents, teachers, and principals in the areas of budget, curriculum, and personnel. There were two major purposes of this study. The first purpose was to obtain information from all principals in Tennessee's First District concerning their beliefs about the use of corporal punishment in public schools in Tennessee. Generalizations could be made in areas of similar geographic and cultural makeup. The second purpose of this study was to generate reflective thought in Tennessee's First District to clarify administrators' beliefs as to the use of corporal punishment as a deterrent. Relationships Among Teachers' Efficacy, Teachers' Locus-Of-Control, And Student Achievement, David L. Burrell

The purpose of this study was to determine if teacher effectiveness, as measured by value-added gain scores on student achievement, was related to the teacher personality characteristics of efficacy and locus of control. The value-added mean gain scores for each teacher were correlated with teachers' scores on the Rand Corporation Efficacy Scale and the Rose and Medway Teacher Locus of Control Scale. A multiple regression analysis was used to determine if these teacher characteristics along with selected demographic variables could be used as good predictors of achievement gain. The problem of this study was to determine if differences existed between teachers' perceptions of the actual and ideal level of involvement in decision making in elementary schools. It represents one part of a comprehensive research project conducted simultaneously with two other researchers. The parallel studies examined principals' and parents' involvement in school decision making. The study was conducted during the 1993-94 school year in Tennessee. Significant differences were found between teachers' perception of the actual and ideal levels of involvement in decisions concerning the budgetary process, personnel matters, and curriculum decisions. The Attributes, Teaching Effectiveness, And Educational Commitment Of Part-Time Faculty In North Carolina Community Colleges, Joseph W. Franklin

This study evaluated the attributes, teaching effectiveness and educational commitment of part-time faculty in enrollment-funded community colleges. The Student Instructional Rating instrument was used to measure student perceptions of instructors in the community college. Twenty four community colleges were randomly selected from North Carolina. Within each college, four full-time and four part-time faculty were randomly selected to participate in the study. Attributes of part-time faculty were compared to attributes of full-time faculty. Teaching effectiveness was assessed from dimensions on the Student Instructional Rating instrument. Using Student-Managed Interventions To Increase Homework Completion And Accuracy, Daniel E. Olympia, Susan M. Sheridan, William R. Jenson, Debra Andrews

We examined the effectiveness of self-managed individual and group contingency procedures in improving the completion and accuracy rates of daily mathematics homework assignments. A group of sixth-grade students having homework difficulties in mathematics were selected for the study. There was substantial improvement in the amount of homework completed over baseline for a majority of the students, whereas the results for accuracy were mixed. Students who participated in the self-management training made significant gains on standardized measures of academic achievement and curriculum-based measures of classroom performance. Parents also reported significantly fewer problems associated with homework completion following the intervention. Students who …

Few valid and reliable placement procedures are available to assess the English language proficiency of adults who enroll in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs. Whereas placement material exists for children and university ESOL students, the needs of students in adult community education programs have not been adequately addressed.

Furthermore, the research suggests that a number of variables, such as, native language, age, prior schooling, length of residence, and employment are related to second language acquisition. The anonymous worker- the mother, the teacher- the anonymous woman. Woman defined by her fixed place in the system of reproduction. How has this come to be? How has woman become-how does she remain-an anonymous instrument in the reproduction of patriarchy? "Education for Service," and “The Truth Shall Make You Free,” are two aphorisms engraved in granite over doorways of the Boston Normal School (BNS) buildings on Huntington Avenue in Boston. One can argue that the history of women in the teaching profession, its paradoxical and conflicted reality, are reflected in the complex and contradictory meanings of these two aphorisms. Young women students at BNS were moving toward greater freedom or autonomy by taking advantage of the educational opportunity available to them in this city-supported, tuition-free teacher training institution.
