The challenges facing Black males throughout the educational pipeline have been discussed by researchers in detail. However, missing from this research are discussions from the perspective of researchers, educators, and community members united on how to better support Black males. The purpose of this reflective piece is twofold. First, we address and contextualize the issues that Black boys and men face and have to overcome in academic and community settings from our various perspectives serving as a teacher candidate, in-service teacher, and higher education professionals. No outsider, no professor of education, and no researcher will completely solve the problem. Lakewood is unique. The economic, political, and moral vitality of Lakewood, with its world renown for learning, is not at all focused on the Lakewood School District, but on its independent district, which is growing at a staggering eighteen percent annually. I began my graduate studies in the spring, 2005 and finished in spring, 2007. Over those two and a half years, I have transformed my view of education. I have developed a vision and implemented changes in my own instruction. I learned what educators mean by change and have embraced its benefits. I realized that the school is not an isolated institution, but must seek outside support and enlist all members of the community. Most importantly, I learned that principals are not managers, but instructional leaders who lead by doing.
