Behavioral Thermoregulation And Thermal Mismatches Influence Disease Dynamics In Amphibians, Erin Louise Sauer
Behavioral Thermoregulation And Thermal Mismatches Influence Disease Dynamics In Amphibians, Erin Louise Sauer
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Amphibians are currently the most threatened vertebra taxa on the planet. Hundreds of species are thought to have gone extinct while thousands more have been listed as threatened or endangered over the past few decades. Habitat loss, invasive species, climate change, and disease are all thought to have partially contributed to these declines. Two pathogens in particular, infectious viruses in the genus Ranavirus (simply referred to as ranavirus) and the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), have been associated with global mass mortality events of amphibians. Virulent pathogens such as these tend to impose strong selective pressures on their hosts driving the ...

Breeding For Resistance In California Strawberry To Verticillium Dahliae, Zachary Christman
Breeding For Resistance In California Strawberry To Verticillium Dahliae, Zachary Christman
Theses, Dissertations, and Student Research in Agronomy and Horticulture
Since 1930 the University of California, Davis, has been developing strawberry cultivars that are adapted to the agricultural industry and regional farms. Developing cultivars that require fewer inputs are of significant economic importance in agronomy. Developing a crop resistant to a disease is beneficial for horticulturists since less labor and chemicals are needed for a high yield.6
In commercial strawberry cultivars, complete resistance to V. dahlia is extremely rare. The majority of Californian strawberry cultivars are highly susceptible to it.2 Over the last 18 years of plant breeding for strawberry cultivars with a high degree of resistance and ...

Building Healthy Communities In The Dominican Republic: A Mixed-Methods Approach Towards Engaging The Community, Camille Lundberg, Fatema Bhagat, Katherine Brown, Arelis Moore De Peralta
Community Engagement and Research Symposia
Breakout Session 1C: The Building Healthy Communities Creative Inquiry is an ongoing undergraduate and graduate student-led project from Clemson University. Its goal is to facilitate community-driven improvement of a small rural community in the Dominican Republic, Las Malvinas II. We strive to address five public health priorities, identified in consultation with the community, including vaccine-preventable diseases, chronic diseases, education, sanitation, and unwanted pregnancies. To address these areas for improvement, our research used a mixed-methods approach, using both qualitative and quantitative data gathering tools. Qualitative methods included focus groups and interviews with community leaders and relevant governmental and non-governmental organizations from ...
