Video Self-Modeling To Improve Reading Fluency, Scotlynd Campbell, Mackenzie Cable, Tyler Debernardi Dec 2012

Video Self-Modeling To Improve Reading Fluency, Scotlynd Campbell, Mackenzie Cable, Tyler Debernardi

Applied Behavior Analysis (SPED 432) and Intervention Strategies for Literacy (SPED 431)

In this poster the following question was explored: “Does video self-modeling (VSM) improve reading fluency?” The authors located sources which demonstrated video self-modeling seemed effective across a variety of academic areas and adaptive behavior skills. When VSM was employed with tutoring, the reading fluency of four, 1st grade students seemed to increase. The study showed that VSM increases fluency because when the researchers implemented reading tutoring without VSM. Tutoring was not as effective as when implemented along with VSM. In conclusion, this strategy can be implemented in reading classrooms, applied behaviors and academic skills.

Assessing Diverse Community College Students' Vocabulary Comprehension Through Context Construction, Andrea S. Salis Oct 2012

Assessing Diverse Community College Students' Vocabulary Comprehension Through Context Construction, Andrea S. Salis

NERA Conference Proceedings 2012

Sixty-nine community college students completed a study which assessed their vocabulary comprehension based on their ability to define randomly selected Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) words and construct their own sentences that illustrated the meaning of the word. This research assessed students’ vocabulary comprehension through their ability to construct context. The information provided from this study demonstrates the variability of students’ vocabulary comprehension. The results of this repeated measures design, demonstrated that students mean scores were very low (5.67, 4.54, 5.54, and 5.91 out of a possible score of 50) for vocabulary definition and comprehension. This indicates that this was a …

Assessing Clinical Trial Informed Consent Comprehension In Non-Cognitively-Impaired Adults: A Systematic Review Of Instruments, Laura Buccini, Don Iverson, Peter Caputi, Caroline Jones, Sheridan Gho

Don C. Iverson

This systematic review identifies and critically evaluates instruments that have been developed to measure clinical trial informed consent comprehension in non-cognitively-impaired adults. Literature searches were carried out on Medline (Ovid), PsycInfo, CINHAL, ERIC, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library for English language articles published between January 1980 and September 2008. Instruments were excluded if they focused on consent onto paediatric trials, the construct under study was primarily capacity or competency, or the instrument was developed specifically for psychiatric or cognitively-impaired populations. Instruments selected for review were evaluated against the following criteria: (1) method of item generation; (2) type and format of test …

Toward A Construct Definition Of Informed Consent Comprehension, Laura D. Buccini, Caroline Jones, Don Iverson, Peter Caputi Jun 2012

Toward A Construct Definition Of Informed Consent Comprehension, Laura D. Buccini, Caroline Jones, Don Iverson, Peter Caputi

Don C. Iverson

Variation in how informed consent comprehension tests have been developed may be largely due to the absence of a standardized construct definition. Developing a construct definition would provide a standardized framework for determining how an instrument should be constructed, implemented, interpreted, and applied. Therefore, we utilized the Delphi consensus approach with an international expert panel (N = 19) to gather knowledge, opinions and eventually consensus for a construct definition. Expert consensus was achieved after three revision cycles. While acknowledging that there are limitations to this study, it nonetheless should be considered as a step toward standardization of a construct definition …

Bar Graphs & Baselines: Student Perceptions Of Distortions In Real World Graphs, Robert K. Janes Iii May 2012

Bar Graphs & Baselines: Student Perceptions Of Distortions In Real World Graphs, Robert K. Janes Iii

Honors Scholar Theses

It is important for every educated member of our society to be able to read, comprehend, and interpret graphs. To that end, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Common Core State Standards have endorsed a kindergarten through eighth-grade mathematics curriculum that is rich in data analysis and graphical literacy skills. These skills are important, as graphs in the public sphere may include certain features that can cause misperceptions of the data. Such features may be intentional or unintentional and can include non-zero baselines, representing data with extra dimensions, stretching and shrinking graphics, not displaying outliers, and …

The Correlation Between The Three Reading Fluency Subskills And Reading Comprehension In At-Risk Adolescent Readers, Craig Courbron Apr 2012

The Correlation Between The Three Reading Fluency Subskills And Reading Comprehension In At-Risk Adolescent Readers, Craig Courbron

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine which of the three reading fluency subskills were most strongly correlated with reading comprehension in adolescent at-risk readers. The participants were 82 adolescent males (ages 13-19) who had been committed to a juvenile detention facility. Archival data from a two-year period was collected from a maximum security juvenile detention facility in a rural section of the Northeastern United States. The Measures of Academic Progress test was used to collect reading comprehension data; the Qualitative Reading Inventory-4 test was used to collect reading speed and reading accuracy data; the Multidimensional Fluency Scale was …

What Counts As Comprehension In Teacher Practice?, Susan Byers, Pauline T. Jones, Lisa K. Kervin Jan 2012

What Counts As Comprehension In Teacher Practice?, Susan Byers, Pauline T. Jones, Lisa K. Kervin

Comprehension is generally considered to be an essential skill required in all learning areas. The Australian Curriculum argues that much of the explicit teaching of literacy occurs in the English learning area, and is strengthened, made specific and extended in other learning areas as students engage in a range of learning activities with significant literacy demands (ACARA, 2012, p. 9). This has important ramifications for all teachers because they are charged with the responsibility of ensuring their students acquire the literacy skills necessary for success in the discipline areas. Despite this, comprehension means different things to different people. This paper …
