A Study On The Impact Of Funding On State-Level Community College Governance Systems, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher
A Study On The Impact Of Funding On State-Level Community College Governance Systems, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Building on a 2015 national landscape research study of state-level community college governance systems, the purpose of this study was to determine if there were correlational relationships between revenue resource funds, state-level community college governance systems, and state funding distribution formulae. Many states had experienced change since 2000, and therefore, it was important to research the impact of funding. Although state funding distribution formulae emerged organically, they remain exposed to ever-changing technological, economic, and political developments. Similarly, state-level community college governance systems also remain susceptible to these technological, economic, and political dynamics. It has been noted that these two subjects ...

“Warming Up” In The Developmental Sequence? Upward Transfer Conditional On Dependency Status, Cody Davidson, Kristin B. Wilson
Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice
The purpose of this study was to determine predictor factors of upward transfer for Kentucky community college students enrolled in a developmental algebra course. For independent students, a mother with a college degree, a declared major, a federal work-study position, greater adjusted gross income, and a higher grade point average was positively correlated with upward transfer. For dependent students, a father with a college degree, a declared major, and a higher grade point average was positively correlated with upward transfer.

The Role Of Professional Development In Adjunct Nursing Faculty Identity Salience, Jared Dean Seliger
The Role Of Professional Development In Adjunct Nursing Faculty Identity Salience, Jared Dean Seliger
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to understand how adjunct nursing faculty integrate their pedagogical professional development (PD) experiences to develop identity salience as an educator, and understand how PD affects their perceptions of commitment, satisfaction, and time spent in the adjunct role. Administrators of nursing programs can use the results as evidence of the importance of providing PD to their adjunct faculty. Ten adjunct nursing faculty who participated in PD were interviewed using phenomenological qualitative methods comprised of interviewing and gathering field notes. The themes emerging from the interview revealed that ongoing PD fosters a teaching identity ...
Comparative State Community College Return On Investment: State Funding, Local Funding, Tuition And Graduation Rates For Community Colleges, Christopher Neary
Comparative State Community College Return On Investment: State Funding, Local Funding, Tuition And Graduation Rates For Community Colleges, Christopher Neary
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
America’s community colleges have recently been thrust into the national spotlight as people look to retrain or find economic alternatives to higher education. This substantial increase in accountability is met with the constraints of financial resources and other limiting factors structured into community college systems. In this paper I examine community college return on investment by states, which govern the responsibility of educating America’s workforce through their diverse community college systems. To improve America’s postsecondary education competency is to optimize collective action of U.S. state community college systems. While colleges and universities contribute to national education ...
The Role Of Local History In The Curriculum At A Rural, Southeastern Community College, Sandra Lee Walker
The Role Of Local History In The Curriculum At A Rural, Southeastern Community College, Sandra Lee Walker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Local history knowledge informs citizens of the political, social, economic, and cultural aspects of their communities. Community colleges are uniquely situated to address citizens' educational needs because of their historic mission to serve local people. The problem at a rural college located in a southeastern region of the United States was the perception of a lack of local history in the curriculum. Dewey, Schon, Brookfield, and Mezirow's perspectives on reflection guided this case study. Two research questions focused on how faculty and staff at the college perceived the role of local history and its relationship to the curriculum and ...

Predicting Transfer Students' Selection Of A Stem Major And Academic Adjustment: A Study Of Community College Students At A Midwestern University, Terry Burdell Gaalswyk
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research project investigated differences between transfer students choosing STEM- and non-STEM-related majors, determined the factors affecting a transfer student's choice of a STEM- or non-STEM-related major, and examined differences in academic adjustment between STEM and non-STEM students.
The results suggest differences in the background characteristics of students with non-STEM and those with STEM majors. Parental income of students with STEM majors was lower and students with STEM majors were primarily male. Students in STEM-related majors at Iowa State University (ISU) had more credits in calculus, chemistry, and environmental science. Furthermore, this academic preparation was a significant predictor of ...
Nontraditional Hispanic College Students' Perceptions Of Their Sense Of Belonging At A 2-Year College In Southwest Texas, Ronald Eugene Zawacki-Maldonado
Nontraditional Hispanic College Students' Perceptions Of Their Sense Of Belonging At A 2-Year College In Southwest Texas, Ronald Eugene Zawacki-Maldonado
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this study was to understand how a sense of belonging contributes to graduation persistence among nontraditional Hispanic college students. The collectivist culture among these adult learners often results in family and work obligations that curtail their pursuit of higher education. The voices of these students are mostly absent in the current literature and warrant the current research study. Sense of belonging and retention theory formed the conceptual framework for this phenomenological study. A purposeful sample of 16 nontraditional Hispanic students enrolled in a 2-year community college in Southwest Texas participated in interviews. Data analysis focused on themes ...

The study will determine the rate of completion of articulation participants who transfer from a North Carolina Community College to a state university in North Carolina and enroll in traditional face-to-face classes versus articulation participants who enroll in online degree completion. There is considerable literature on articulation from the perspective of student satisfaction and an administrator's perception. Substantial research on policies and procedures as well as comparison to native and transfer students ...
Exploring The Construct Of Social Integration In A Community College Environment, Scott Mertes
Exploring The Construct Of Social Integration In A Community College Environment, Scott Mertes
Educational Administration: Theses, Dissertations, and Student Research
Among current retention models, Tinto’s Interactionalist Model has reached near paradigmatic status. When his model has been applied to two-year college settings, the social integration results have been inconsistent. This has led Maxwell (2000) and Deil-Amen (2011) to suggest that a different construct of social integration exists in community colleges, and that this construct may not be related to the traditional construct of social integration in four-year university settings. The current study sought to ascertain whether these two constructs of social integration were related. A random sample of two-year college students were asked to complete a survey consisting of ...

Perceptions Of The Other: Voices Of Adjunct And Fulltime Community College Faculty, William Wayne Backlin
Perceptions Of The Other: Voices Of Adjunct And Fulltime Community College Faculty, William Wayne Backlin
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The practice of hiring adjunct instructors was initially considered to be an anomalous event (Todd, 2004). Community college employment of adjunct instructors, however, witnessed a 50% increase during the 1970s (Cain, 1999) and, by 1984, adjunct instructor utilization in community colleges rose dramatically with an additional 80% growth. Over a 33-year period, 1970-2003, the employment of adjunct faculty in the academe increased 422% (Bouton, 2010). With such a strong adjunct presence within the community college, one question came to mind: How do adjunct and fulltime faculty perceive the other?
The purpose of this study was to investigate adjunct perceptions of ...

High School Students Embedded In Adult Community College Classes, Karen P. Saenz, George W. Moore
Administrative Issues Journal
Early college high schools were established as an initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with the goal for students of earning college credit and an associate degree while in high school. Many of these high school students attend college classes with adults, ages 18 and older, in the same class. Instructors are challenged to address these students’ diverse needs and diverse ways of learning. Young teenagers typically are told exactly what to learn and how it is to be learned; the adult learner, however, is much more independent and he or she learns and thinks differently based on ...
The Role Of Data In Decision Making About Online Distance Education: A Case Study Of Three Community Colleges, William Allan Heineman
The Role Of Data In Decision Making About Online Distance Education: A Case Study Of Three Community Colleges, William Allan Heineman
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Community colleges face pressures to use data to make decisions as they expand online distance education, but practical and political factors as well as the emergent nature of online distance education can be obstacles to making decisions in this way. Using a multiple case study strategy, this study examined the following research questions: 1) How and to what extent do community college academic leaders use data when making decisions about online distance education? 2) What data about online distance education do community college academic leaders cite as influences on their decision making and how strong are those influences? 3) How ...

The data were collected through the use of a computer program written to ...
“Knowledge Utilization” Universities: A Paradigm For Applying Academic Expertise To Social And Environmental Problems, Abraham B. Bernstein
“Knowledge Utilization” Universities: A Paradigm For Applying Academic Expertise To Social And Environmental Problems, Abraham B. Bernstein
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
Promoting the utilization of knowledge is an important mission for institutions of higher education. The "knowledge utilization" university should stand alongside the research university, the professional school, the liberal arts college, and the community college as one of the five archetypes of higher education institutions.
Environmental problems typify a class of social problems that require the utilization of existing knowledge in a trans-disciplinary manner just as much as they require the creation of new knowledge through research. These problems are characterized by their multiple dimensions-- they have scientific, technical, social, political, economic, and ethical aspects, all of which must be ...

Higher Education: The Black Professional, Donald H. Godbold, Andrew Goodrich, William Moore, Jr.,
IUSTITIA
The black professional in the community college is a catalog of contradictions. His or her condition can only be described as tragic; and his or her plight is a travesty on the philosophy of the two-year college. The preliminary findings of one study in progress note that nearly half (409 or 47 per cent) of the 865 two-year institutions included in the sample do not have a single black faculty member or administrator. Eighty-nine of the remaining 456 colleges have only one black staff member. Similarly, there are a number of community colleges located in areas heavily populated by blacks ...
