Transactional And Transformational Leadership In The Superintendency: A Phenomenological Study Of Three Upper Peninsula Superintendents’ Experiences, Lisa A. Coombs-Gerou
Transactional And Transformational Leadership In The Superintendency: A Phenomenological Study Of Three Upper Peninsula Superintendents’ Experiences, Lisa A. Coombs-Gerou
All NMU Master's Theses
This study aimed to analyze and provide an understanding of how three rural public school superintendents in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan practiced transformational leadership. Transformational leadership includes the elements of idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individual consideration (Burns, 1978). Transformational superintendents must lead our schools to provide students with the best educational opportunity. The study focused on the superintendents experiences in deciding to become a superintendent, their beliefs about leadership, and how they approached decisions through a transactional or transformational process. The study also sought to provide insight into the relationship with their school board and how …
Principal Perceptions Of The Impact Of Turnaround Practices On Student Achievement In New York City Charter Schools, Christina D. Brown
Principal Perceptions Of The Impact Of Turnaround Practices On Student Achievement In New York City Charter Schools, Christina D. Brown
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Principal leadership is at the core of successful school turnaround. This qualitative study explored principals’ perceptions of the success or failure of turnaround methods in their New York City charter school communities. Principal leadership of low-performing schools is one of the most important elements of turnaround success (Stronge & Xu, 2021). While much research has been conducted to determine what makes a principal effective or ineffective, not much research exists that reveals the perspective of turnaround principals regarding the importance of their roles in dramatically increasing student achievement. The theoretical framework for this study was guided by the work of …
Perceptions On Charter Schools In West Virginia, Donna R. Dixon
Perceptions On Charter Schools In West Virginia, Donna R. Dixon
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In 2018 and 2019, the public school teachers in West Virginia walked out of their classrooms to protest charter schools opening in the Mountain State. During a special legislative session in the summer of 2019, the state's first charter school law was passed, paving the way to open West Virginia's first charter school. This research provides data on whether the COVID-19 global pandemic changed how individuals in West Virginia view charter schools. A concurrent nested mixed-method approach was used for this research. A twenty-one-question survey, Perceptions on Charter Schools in West Virginia, was developed using both Likert scale and …

School Climate In The School Choice Era: A Comparative Analysis Of District-Run Public Schools And Charter Schools, Christopher Damian Duszka
School Climate In The School Choice Era: A Comparative Analysis Of District-Run Public Schools And Charter Schools, Christopher Damian Duszka
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Comparative analyses of district-run public schools and charter schools are limited to performance outcomes. There is a dearth of research on how the school-types vary on factors consequential to performance such as school climate. Public-private distinctions, such as in organizational autonomy, value orientations, funding structures, and management practices, could result in school climate dissimilarities between district-run public schools and charter schools.
The aim of this dissertation is to assess the influence organizational factors have on school climate and determine if school-type affects school climate. Student and staff school climate survey data from the Miami-Dade school district were utilized for this …

En Busca De Un Futuro Mejor [In Search Of A Better Future]: Understanding Charter School Selection By Immigrant Latina/O Families, Carlos Alberto Garcia
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study focused on understanding the process immigrant Latina/o families in the greater Los Angeles area underwent when selecting a charter school for their children. Through narrative interviews, 13 participants shared their perspectives of how and why they chose a charter school, and detailed the factors they considered in their selection process. Through the theoretical framework of cultural community wealth, social and cultural capital, participants answered the research question why and how do immigrant Latina/o parents research and apply to charter schools, and what are the factors they consider in the decision-making process?
Participants described social networks as connections …
The Perspectives Of Core Academic Middle School Teachers Regarding Career Education Under Different School Settings, Meredith Leigh Bogush
The Perspectives Of Core Academic Middle School Teachers Regarding Career Education Under Different School Settings, Meredith Leigh Bogush
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to quantify core academic middle school teachers’ (English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social science) perspectives of career education. Prior research denotes that if career education exposure and awareness is provided in middle school grades, then students have the potential to develop a valuable understanding of various occupations available in the future (Akos, Konold, & Niles, 2004). Students observe what the work accomplishes and the effort required for the employee to be successful. If the occupation interests the students, then an increased motivation to complete their studies is likely to develop as they see the …
An Analysis Of Successful Charter School Operations, Margaret Helen Ameel
An Analysis Of Successful Charter School Operations, Margaret Helen Ameel
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study adds to the literature specific practices and systems that contribute to successful charter schools. Nine open ended interviews were conducted, which were then read and coded to identify themes. Using a process consistent with the constant comparison method, codes were transferred into a separate document. To ensure novel code development, constant comparison involved a recursive check of the code list. The code list was considered complete after reaching a point of theoretical saturation whereby novel codes were no longer necessary to interpret uncoded interview content. Codes were then assembled into higher order themes based on shared meaning and …
Access, Technology, And Parental Involvement: A Case Study On A West Los Angeles Charter School, Tanisha M. Barnett
Access, Technology, And Parental Involvement: A Case Study On A West Los Angeles Charter School, Tanisha M. Barnett
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
Research clearly indicates that parental involvement plays an essential role in the educational process of any student regardless of grade level. However, technology is changing the way schools communicate, which affects the way parents are involved in their children’s education. Research on the digital divide indicates that there are differences in access based on race and family income. In other words, lower income and minority families tend to have less access to technology, and therefore may be less able to fully participate in schools.
This issue of social justice was investigated at a small charter school located in West Los …

This study focused on the integration of 21st Century technology as determined by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards•T within a place-based curriculum framework supplemented by the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound approach to education as presented in a rural Colorado mountain community K-8 charter school. The case study involved an in-depth look regarding how 21st century technology integration affected the place-based, Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound approach to teaching and learning practices specific to the North Routt Community Charter School (NRCCS). The particular research aimed to inform or enhance the charter school’s current practices by questioning: …
Development And Support Of Dual Language Policies, Hollis Derek Cone
Development And Support Of Dual Language Policies, Hollis Derek Cone
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teaching a second language is not a new idea. Bilingual education has gone through a metamorphosis over the years. The most current bilingual program is the two-way or dual language program. Dual language programs educate students that speak a different language in the same classroom. The idea is that one group is strengthened in its native language; the other group acquires the second language.
Each local school board must implement its own policies to create a dual language program; unfortunately, few, if any, research studies exist that identify how local school boards can implement a dual language program. School districts …

The Rights Of Disabled Students, Derek W. Black, Robert A. Garda Jr., John E. Taylor, Emily Gold Waldman
Robert A. Garda
Education Law: Equality, Fairness, and Reform situates case law in the broader education world by including edited versions of federal policy guidance, seminal law review articles, social science studies, and policy reports. It offers comprehensive coverage of education law while also focusing specifically on equality and civil rights issues. It includes individual chapters on each major area of inequality: race, poverty, gender, disability, homelessness, and language status. Those chapters are followed by a structured approach to the complex first amendment questions, dividing the first amendment into three different chapters and addressing, in order, freedom of expression and thought, religion in …
Exploring The Leadership Practices Of Social Justice Leaders At Urban Charter Schools, Kandle Fraser
Exploring The Leadership Practices Of Social Justice Leaders At Urban Charter Schools, Kandle Fraser
Doctoral Dissertations
While by and large urban public schools continue to not serve the needs of all of the students in their communities, there are some school principals who are creating educational equity for all of their students and deserve to be called social justice leaders. This study aimed to expand the field of school leadership studies and focus on social justice leaders in charter schools using a phenomenological interview methodology. Each of four participants was interviewed in three 90-minute sessions. The first interview focused on the person's life history before becoming school leaders, the second was on their leadership practices, and …
Taken Over: The Story Of The Locke High School Takeover Through A Qualitative Study Of Student Voice, Joshua Michael Beardall
Taken Over: The Story Of The Locke High School Takeover Through A Qualitative Study Of Student Voice, Joshua Michael Beardall
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
In Los Angeles, the charter movement has gained incredible momentum as Charter Management Organizations take over troubled public schools in working class neighborhoods and communities of color. In Watts, a Latino and African American working class neighborhood, Locke High School had long stood as a troubled school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. After decades of low test scores, violence, and astronomical dropout rates, Green Dot Public Schools took over the campus and, in 2008, opened Locke as a public charter school under its management. This study examined the perceptions, experiences, and stories of five 12th-grade students at Locke …
“This Is Our Life. We Can’T Drive Home.” An Analysis Of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy As Perceived By Elementary Teachers, Students And Families In An Urban Charter School, Elaine Azalia Mcneil-Girmai
“This Is Our Life. We Can’T Drive Home.” An Analysis Of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy As Perceived By Elementary Teachers, Students And Families In An Urban Charter School, Elaine Azalia Mcneil-Girmai
LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations
As schools have become more diverse ethnically and linguistically, the likelihood of cultural mismatches among students, families, and teachers has increased (Frank, 1999). Culturally relevant pedagogy has at its core the understanding that incorporating students‘ culture into the practices of the school and the classroom through culturally relevant curriculum is likely to improve student cooperation, inspire a greater understanding of the educational program, and increase academic outcomes (Brown, 2004). These pedagogies have the potential to be a vital tool toward closing the achievement gap, yet the practices associated with them are in danger of meeting the same fate as multicultural …

Challenging The Status Quo: Campus Community School, Allen Zipke, Marcy Zipke
Essays in Education
Campus Community School is a 300-student charter school in Dover, DE, which serves children in grades 1 through 8. As a new charter school the founders have had the opportunity to build our ideal school, from designing a constructivist project-based curriculum, to implementing site based management, and focusing heavily on parent participation. This essay illustrates how well the charter school model can work. As the administrator and one of the founding members of CCS, I describe our challenges and hurdles as well as successes.
