The kind of rental arrangements for cropland vary widely in each locality and from one geographic area to another. What is desirable for one particular landlord/tenant relationship is not acceptable for others. The purpose of this publication is to help tenants and landlords develop fair cash-rent arrangements and assist them in making sound decisions based on a fair evaluation of resources. The first section addresses whether a fixed cash-rent lease arrangement should be used. Techniques are described in this NebGuide for excluding rodents from drains, pipes, feed bunks, bins, and storage containers.

Rodents often travel along pipes, electrical cables, conduits, drains, and other equipment to gain access to buildings used for housing livestock and storing feed. Rodent-proof materials should be installed to prevent access to buildings along these routes. Additional methods to consider in an integrated pest management (IPM) program include sanitation, toxicants, and trapping.

Safe working conditions for personnel and safe, healthful living conditions for animals are critical requirements in the design of all farmsteads.

All farmsteads periodically should be evaluated for potential hazards and conditions that could lead to injury, death, or premature building failure or loss. Some hazards develop with time and are easily overlooked. Others are the result of poor planning or just being "too busy." To assess the safety of your farmstead and buildings, answer the following questions. Any question that cannot be answered with a firm "yes" indicates a need for corrective action.

This report differs from previous reports in two respects: it covers experimental work up to January 1, 1935, and it includes brief abstracts of publications since the last report. Previously most of the report dealt with work done before the end of the fiscal year; that is, work done between June 30 and January 1 was not reported until over a year later, for the most part. The present report corrects that defect, and in addition the abstracts of publications will make the report useful as a reference guide to published matter.
