Learning From The History Of Language Oppression: Educators As Agents Of Language Justice, Sandra Rodriguez-Arroyo, Ferial Pearson Dec 2020

Learning From The History Of Language Oppression: Educators As Agents Of Language Justice, Sandra Rodriguez-Arroyo, Ferial Pearson

Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education

There is a long history in this country of language oppression that has led to policies currently in place that affect the way educators are asked to teach. Therefore, educators must understand national and local language policy to know how it affects their students and how they can perform their duties as educators. Even though the U.S. does not have an official language, states have enacted language policies through court decisions and legislation. These policies have led to students being denied access to English as a Second Language (ESL) and bilingual education programs, resources, and accommodations, all of which lead …

Providing Students With Multimodal Feedback Experiences, Dan Martin Dec 2020

Providing Students With Multimodal Feedback Experiences, Dan Martin

Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education

In higher education, feedback is an effective but underappreciated teaching tool that expands students’ opportunities for learning. Students need more formative feedback that can lead to dialogic experiences, and they need more feedback experiences in different mediums and modes. Providing students with multimodal feedback that is formative may lead to more dialogic experiences for students and improve their learning. Multimodal feedback experiences benefit all students, including those from diverse and disabled communities. This paper examines some of the advantages and limitations of written, audio, and video feedback and argues that feedback that is primarily formative and delivered using multiple modes …

The Lived Experience Of Psychological Occupational Stress In Early Childhood Teacher Leaders, Brooke Fletcher, Debora Basler Wisneski

Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education

The existence of occupational and specifically psychological occupational stress of early childhood education (ECE) professionals is well established. However, little qualitative research has been published describing the lived experience of psychological occupational stress in this setting. The aim of this study was to provide a deeper understanding of ECE professionals’ stress to better support their occupational health. This was accomplished through a secondary phenomenological analysis of interviews with ECE teachers (n=4) collected by the primary author for a larger study of professional development in ECE leadership. The researchers found that the essential description of psychological occupational stress for these ECE …

Still Learning: Covid Through The Eyes Of A Medical Student, Alexis Strahan

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

As a first-year medical student when the COVID-19 pandemic found a foothold, I felt an overwhelming amount of emotions that accompanied the pandemic’s spread. Fear, although a reasonable choice, was not the first emotion that I experienced. In fact, it was a general feeling of paralysis. I had not six months prior taken an oath to commit my career and life to the service of the public’s health care needs, yet I could provide little more than the textbook knowledge of biochemistry or genetics from my first semester of learning. My hands felt unarmed and unskilled for the fight. What …

Zoomprov. Improvisation Exercises For Language Learning In Online Classes With Zoom Or Similar Tech For Beginning And Intermediate Learners And Beyond, Mona Eikel-Pohen

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

The improv language exercises in this compilation are chosen from the experience I gathered 20 years ago, but also from the amazing work of Lauren Esposito and Scranton Improv & Comedy that have been more real than anything else to me this past summer, and from Jim Ansaldo, who taught me how to structure improv exercises online. They are organized by level, referring to the Common European Framework of References for Languages. That means, A1 exercises can be conducted at the beginners level but also at all other higher levels, but B2 exercises should not be imposed upon beginners or …

Epistemic practices are important markers of scientific literacy because they reflect ways of thinking and working that are similar to those performed by scientists.

Methods: Numerical experimental data related to two topics of immunology were provided to students through virtual learning environments. The groups of students met on WhatsApp© mobile application to negotiate the construction reports containing …

Law School Exams During A Pandemic: One Law School’S Experience, Beth Parker Dec 2020

Law School Exams During A Pandemic: One Law School’S Experience, Beth Parker

Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental & Innovation Law

In 2020, toward the end of the spring semester, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted life across the globe. Institutions, including law schools, felt the widespread effects of this public health crisis. Law schools were forced to move entire curriculums online in record time and consider how they were going to administer final exams. There is no precedent or manual for how to do this successfully. Law school exams are inherently stressful events in a law student’s career because their performance on the exam inordinately influences their grades and class rankings. Typically, law students are already on edge during final exams without …

Fifty reading items were examined and analyzed using a statistical method for detecting DIF. The items were individually tested for gender DIF using Rasch model analysis with the analysis tool of ConQuest. The results showed that six …

Alternative Item Selection Strategies For Improving Test Security In Computerized Adaptive Testing Of The Algorithm, Iwan Suhardi Dec 2020

Alternative Item Selection Strategies For Improving Test Security In Computerized Adaptive Testing Of The Algorithm, Iwan Suhardi

REiD (Research and Evaluation in Education)

One of the ability estimation methods that is widely applied to the Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) algorithm is the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). However, the maximum likelihood method has the disadvantage of being unable to find a solution to the ability estimation of test-takers when the test takers' scores do not have a pattern. If there are test takers who get either score of 0 or perfect score, then the abilities of test-takers are usually estimated using the step-size model. However, the step-size model often results in item exposure where certain items will appear more often than other items. This …
