Mathematics For Whom: Reframing And Humanizing Mathematics, Cathery Yeh, Brande M. Otis

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"In this paper, we share a process in which we, as mathematics teacher educators and education researchers, have worked in collaboration with K–6 teachers and students to analyze the purported neutrality of mathematics textbook word problems and to consider ways to use mathematics to analyze social inequities in the world. In the sections that follow, we describe the framework that grounds our development of justice-oriented mathematics curriculum and share an example of how textbook analysis can serve as an entryway to investigations that raise students’ awareness of social issues while developing their power as mathematics thinkers and doers. Drawing from …

Construction Of A Scale Of Contemplative Practice In Higher Education: An Exploratory Study, Maryann Krikorian, Randy T. Busse Jan 2019

Construction Of A Scale Of Contemplative Practice In Higher Education: An Exploratory Study, Maryann Krikorian, Randy T. Busse

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Some scholars have formed a more expansive view of knowledge that moves beyond the cognitive notion of intellect. For example, emotional intelligence theory posits that human intelligence encompasses both cognitive and emotional competencies, providing a framework for a relatively new concept known as contemplative practice. The purposes of this study were: (a) to develop a self-report measure, the Scale of Contemplative Practice in Higher Education (SCOPE), and (b) to explore issues of validity and reliability related to the SCOPE. An extensive review of the literature, reference to personal experiences, and consultation with an expert panel were used to generate scale …

In this dissertation inquiry, I explore the counternarratives of adults with disabilities relating to their identities and how their identities intersect and change with regards to technology and assistive technology. Theoretically building upon critical disability studies (Goodley, 2017; Davis, 2013, 2017; Erevelles, 2011) and posthumanism (Haraway, 1985/2016; Snaza & Weaver, 2015; Weaver, 2010) and methodologically drawing upon counternarrative or counterstories (Bamberg & Andrews, 2004; Carmona & Luschen, 2014; Delgado, 1989; Glenn, 2012; He & Phillion, 2008; He & Ross, 2012; Sandoval & Davis, 2008; Smith, 2006; Solazano & Yosso, 2002; Tuck, 2009), I explore the stories of seven participants with …

Forgotten And Overlooked: A Personal Reflection Of Foster Parenting And School, Seth J. Lickteig, Amanda Lickteig Jan 2019

Forgotten And Overlooked: A Personal Reflection Of Foster Parenting And School, Seth J. Lickteig, Amanda Lickteig

Educational Considerations

The number of children in foster care has risen markedly in recent years, namely because of the opioid crisis currently plaguing the United States. Students placed in foster care experience higher dropout and lower graduation rates compared to their peers. School mobility has caused many foster care students to fall through the cracks. However, despite these concerns, teachers and school administrators have received little training regarding this population of students. Schools are ill-prepared for the unique emotional and social needs of children in foster care, often labeling them under the larger umbrella term of at-risk—which focuses primarily on their …

Can Education Change Society? Michael Apple’S Simple Question And Complex Answer, Connie Schaffer

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Can education change society? The question is simple, and Michael W. Apple’s response is an irrefutable, yes. However, a broader exegesis is needed because the issues confounding this question are steeped in powerful political forces from both the right and left. Within the pages of Can Education Change Society?, Apple continues his long-time professional exposition regarding education’s role in challenging these and other hegemonic systems.

Pedagogical Approach To Developing The Hiring Practices Of Higher Education Administrators, Steven Tolman, Daniel W. Calhoun Jan 2019

Pedagogical Approach To Developing The Hiring Practices Of Higher Education Administrators, Steven Tolman, Daniel W. Calhoun

Georgia Journal of College Student Affairs

Most student affairs professionals will serve in a managerial and/or supervisory role at some point in their careers, but only a limited number of higher education graduate preparatory programs have required coursework focusing on this competency area. This situation is disconcerting, as there seems to be an assumption within the student affairs field that new professionals have the formal training and experiences needed to immediately be placed into these managerial and/or supervisory roles. In an effort to address this discrepancy, and in particular staffing practices, one higher education graduate preparatory program developed a course on staffing practices, using an innovative …

Preparing Pre-Service Teachers To Present At A State Conference, Heidi Eisenreich Jan 2019

Preparing Pre-Service Teachers To Present At A State Conference, Heidi Eisenreich

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

As mathematics teacher educators, we have a responsibility to prepare as many people as we can, to teach mathematics in ways that foster a deeper understanding of the content. We do this by teaching current and future teachers in college programs and providing professional development to in-service teachers. A less explored way is to prepare these “students” to present ideas they have learned to colleagues at their school, other schools in their district, and conferences. In this paper, I share my experience of helping students go through the process of preparing to present over the last two years at our …

Creative Writing In The Mathematics Classroom, William Lacefield, Laura Markert Jan 2019

Creative Writing In The Mathematics Classroom, William Lacefield, Laura Markert

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

Creative writing in the mathematics classroom promotes mathematical applications in the real world, constructivist learning, embodied learning, transfer of mathematical ideas, and student engagement. When students are allowed to write about mathematical concepts creatively, they are able to take concepts that they have learned and put them into their world or even create a situation where the mathematical concept applies. Applying mathematical concepts to other environments helps learners transfer mathematical concepts. Learners are able to take the mathematics content and contextualize it outside of the classroom. Writing in mathematics also is a way for students to embody learning. Because writing …

The Interview Project: A Way Of Bridging Theory And Practice In Early Childhood Mathematics Preservice Teacher Education, Doris Santarone

Georgia Educational Researcher

Twenty-nine early childhood preservice teachers (PSTs) participated in an Interview Project. The project’s goals were for the PSTs to apply their knowledge of research on children’s mathematics in their interactions with a child and to learn to listen to and learn from children. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the project and determine whether it met these goals. Pre and post data were collected, and I found that the PSTs showed a significant improvement in their ability to describe and analyze a child’s mathematics and to use their listening to make appropriate instructional decisions. In addition, I found …

“Taking The Shackles Off”: Metaphor And Metonymy Of Migrant Children And Border Officials In The U.S., Theresa Catalano, Andreas Musolff

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The present paper utilizes (multimodal) critical discourse studies and cognitive linguistics to analyze the verbal and visual metonymies/metaphors found in online news sources that report on unaccompanied youths from Central America and Border Patrol/immigration officials in the U.S. Findings reveal verbal and visual metonymies that dehumanize and criminalize child migrants, while Border Patrol/immigration enforcement discourse creates WAR/WILD WEST metaphors that justify the militarization of the border. The significance of the study lies in showing how underlying conceptualizations of migrants by immigration and border control agencies help us understand the social imaginary which allows the government to garner public support for …

Automatic Nonnutritive Suck Waveform Discrimination And Feature Extraction In Preterm Infants, Chunxiao Liao, Austin O. Rosner, Jill L. Maron, Dongli Song, Steven M. Barlow

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Background and Objective: The emergence of the nonnutritive suck (NNS) pattern in preterm infants reflects the integrity of the brain and is used by clinicians in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to assess feeding readiness and oromotor development. A critical need exists for an integrated software platform that provides NNS signal preprocessing, adaptive waveform discrimination, feature detection, and batch processing of big data sets across multiple NICU sites. Thus, the goal was to develop and describe a crossplatform graphical user interface (GUI) and terminal application known as NeoNNS for single and batch file time series and frequency-domain analyses of …
