Steam Education Afterschool And Summer Learning, Tracey Hunter-Doniger

The STEAM Journal

This article discusses the potential of STEAM education in afterschool and summer learning programs. The author suggests artistic methods and pedagogies that can be implemented in the programs, such as TAB (teaching artistic abilities), art infusion, and Studio Thinking. Challenges are brought forward and essential factors are suggested for STEAM programs. This article outlines STEAM afterschool and summer programs as spaces that invite, encourage and provide a safe learning environment where the students have more freedom to explore and get a deeper understanding of the arts and other disciplines.

This paper describes the similarities between scientific and artistic processes and explains why both are valuable in the STEAM classroom. This is important because students who understand that struggle is an inherent part of process develop growth mindsets and become better learners. The paper explores the connections between STEM and art. STEAM educators use the experiences of great scientists and artists, along with students personal experiences working through creative process to guide students to understand that learning is an experience. The best learning happens when we persist through challenges.

In this paper we present an overview of different approaches towards STEAM education, including the choices in methodology and pedagogy. From these various viewpoints we build up a framework for STEAM education and relate it to a real-world problem, namely, how a small spider can catch a prey.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the status of STEAM education in Nepal. I conducted a literature review focusing on document analysis for generating themes/categories of STEAM initiatives in Nepal from various sources such as websites, brochures, reports, and government publications. The major themes emerged from the analysis of documents were-- focus on integrated education, STEAM projects, STEAM-challenge, awareness to STEAM education, and academic program in STEAM education. I discussed the challenges of STEAM education followed by the conclusion.

This study aims to develop a valid and reliable self-rating scale instrument for measuring Self-Directed Learning (SDL) skills. This DDI study follows the steps of Hinkin's development (1995) which consists of five stages: creating an item pool, expert conclusion, implementation, confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability analysis. The self-rating scale developed in this study consisted of sixty statements accompanied by a 1-5 Likert scale. The General Self-Efficacy Scale 12 (GSES-12) is a brief measure for assessing self-efficacy. This study aimed to revise an Indonesian language version of the GSES-12 that was translated and adopted from previous research. The revision conducted by following the Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measures, and the final version was administered to 303 (132 male, 171 female) Indonesian students, with a mean age of 19.56 years (SD: 1.20).
