Questioning The Dogma Of Banned Books Week, Elliott Kuecker
Questioning The Dogma Of Banned Books Week, Elliott Kuecker
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article examines the dogmatic celebration of Banned Books Week in libraries in the United States through Foucault's notion of the speaker's benefit and the repressive hypothesis. This paper analyzes a shifting landscape of intellectual freedom (IF) in and outside Florida for children, adolescents, teens and adults. National ideals stand in tension with local and state developments, as new threats are visible in historical, legal, and technological context. Examples include doctrinal shifts, legislative bills, electronic surveillance and recent attempts to censor books, classroom texts, and reading lists.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this interpretive, qualitative multi-case study (Merriam, 2001; Stake, 1995) was to describe the experiences of three elementary classroom teachers as they integrated literacy and social studies during their literacy instruction. This study was grounded in an interpretivist paradigm and a theoretical lens of symbolic interactionism. The guiding questions were: What are the experiences of three elementary teachers when integrating literacy and social studies instruction? What information do teachers use when making decisions about integrated instruction? How do teachers’ beliefs align with their practices? How do teachers organize, plan for, and provide integrated instruction, including how they use …

Ethical Issues: Good, Bad, And Ugly, Roann Barris
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
Censorship: it is unlikely that any academic, especially in the arts, would come out in favor of censorship. But what is the right course of action when a student's work in a graduation show offends the public? And if steps are taken to remove the presumably offensive work, are we betraying our beliefs about the value of student's work or promoting good relationships with the public? This has been an active year for ethical questions about art -- but who expect them to be our own issues? Details about this case and all the roles played will be provided as …
