Nonmetropolitan students in higher education are an understudied population. This thesis uses data from the freshman class of 2011 at a mid-sized nonmetropolitan university to examine the success of nonmetro students at a nonmetro university. The data studied addresses the similarities and dissimilarities between metro and nonmetro students in the cohort in a number of categories: student location of origin, time to degree completion, whether a degree was attained, grade point average of graduating students, type of degree sought, and type of degree attained. In order for a student to be successful in dental hygiene education, the student must gain the required knowledge and skills necessary to perform as a hygienist and possess the ability to utilize critical thinking to apply these attributes while in the program and on the National Board of Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) (Alzahrani, Thompson, & Bauman, 2007; Fried, Maxey, Battani, Gurenlian, Byrd, & Brunick, 2017). Dental hygiene students who attend a medical university have the option to take required pre-requisite courses at a community college or a four-year university. All dental hygiene students transfer from another institution and all have the potential to exhibit transfer shock, which may contribute to a drop in GPA following the transfer to another institution. The Organizational Improvement Plan at Western University

As competition for students and scarce resources increases due to political and economic pressures, awareness and coordination of student retention and completion become a critical priority for post-secondary institutions. However, despite increased attention on Strategic Enrolment Management (SEM) (Black, 2010; Gottheil & Smith, 2011; Hossler & Bontrager, 2015; Wilkinson et al., 2007) and the growth of retention-focused student services in recent years, retention rates remain unchanged (Habley, Bloom, & Robbins, 2012). Post-secondary students are in the midst of a significant transition period (Tinto, 1993) and face challenges related to mental health and wellness, relationships, rigors of academic life, and personal finances (Braxton, Hirschy, & McClendon, 2006; Tinto, 1993). Furthermore, complex institutional structures are increasingly difficult for students to navigate (Karp, 2011) and are not designed around the needs of Generation Z learners (Seemiller & Grace, 2016). This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) describes a “whole-system” solution to the problem that sorts, connects, supports, and transforms students while also transforming the institution (Beatty-Guenter, 1994). An Exploration Of Co-Curricular Involvement In Traditional-Age First-Year Students, Judith Ohochukwu

First-year students are encouraged to get involved in co-curricular activities, as research has indicated there are many benefits (Astin, 1984; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005). One benefit is establishing a sense of belonging (SOB). Sense of belonging is a student’s perceived acceptance or value by the campus community (Strayhorn, 2012, p. 3). Research lacks a robust examination of SOB outcomes associated with active forms of involvement (e.g., joining a club or sports team) and passive forms of involvement (e.g., spectating a football game or attending workshops). The purpose of this study was to determine whether traditional-age (18-25), first-year undergraduate students indicated more SOB outcomes with passive or active forms of co-curricular involvement and with what average time involvement student’s indicated more SOB outcomes. Students completed a questionnaire about their involvement and related SOB outcomes. Findings signified; a) certain demographics of students (e.g., on campus and full-time) were more likely to be involved, b) students indicated similar average number of SOB outcomes for passive and active involvement, and c) low levels of involvement yielded the most SOB indicators. The study findings suggest certain factors could influence a student’s likelihood of involvement and to feel a SOB, students should be involved an average of 0-2 hours weekly.
