The importance of preceptorships, as a mechanism to transfer knowledge of evidence-based nursing practices and developing confidence in nurses, is well-known. However, the effectiveness of preceptorships to develop confidence in perinatal nurses who provide safe care to childbearing women is unknown. Guided by Kolb's model of experiential learning and using a narrative analysis approach, this study examined perinatal nurse residents' perceptions of experiences that enhanced learning and developed confidence during preceptorship. Twenty nurses who completed a perinatal nurse residency of 18 weeks or more in the past 12 months participated in audiotaped, structured interviews. Their answers were transcribed and data …

The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) first-time pass rate for an associate degree in nursing (ADN) program was below the national mean, presenting a problem for graduates who failed the NCLEX-RN and could not enter the workforce as registered nurses. Knowles's assumptions of adult learning, Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve, and Zull's neuroscience research served as the theoretical frameworks for this study. The nurse practitioner (NP) role transition is difficult and ill-supported before and after graduation. Although preceptorships are essential in supporting a NP's role transition, there is a paucity of data on student and novice NPs' experiences with their role transition and how it is supported through preceptorships. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand and describe the meaning of NPs' role transition experiences while in a preceptorship before and after graduation. The Joint Commission reported that communication failures in United States hospitals contribute to 30% of all malpractice claims, and in 2008, The Joint Commission listed the improvement of effective communication among healthcare providers as a National Patient Safety Goal. The purpose of this practice-focused project was to develop a scenario-based communication simulation for implementation approval by a panel of experts. The approved curriculum was designed to integrate a communication-based simulation scenario into the nurse residency program of a large, urban medical center to improve new graduate nurse communication skills, increase nurse communication competency and self-efficacy, and decrease communication errors. Department structure and leadership functions can influence work climate. In one healthcare system, advanced practice providers (APPs) worked in a decentralized structure with multiple leaders. This project explored the impact of the change to centralized leadership for APPs working in an academic healthcare system in which employee turnover was high and satisfaction was low. An ad hoc committee led by the chief medical officer created a centralized department with a designated leader. Hospitalized patients increasingly present with complex health issues that place them at risk for acute patient deterioration (APD). Novice nurses are ill-equipped with the critical clinical skills to function competently in recognizing APD, placing patients at risk for negative health outcomes. Diabetes affects an estimated 29.1 million Americans, with approximately another 1/3 of Americans not yet diagnosed. Complications associated with diabetes include heart disease, stroke, hypertension, blindness, kidney disease, neuropathy and death. All of these complications can be prevented with optimal control of blood glucose levels. Advances in technology provide people living with diabetes (PLWD) a multitude of treatment options such as continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) therapy. Unfortunately, sustained improvement in glycated hemoglobin A1c (HgA1c) is not always achieved even with this advanced therapy.
