Assessing An Assessment: The New Nsse Il Module, Debbie Morrow

Debbie Morrow

The University Libraries at Grand Valley State University successfully advocated for inclusion of the 'Experiences with Information Literacy' module in our Winter 2016 administration of NSSE, the National Survey of Student Engagement. Overall, summary responses for our participating students compared positively to the aggregate means for all participating Large Public institutions in the same cohort. However, further analysis of responses broken out by individual colleges within the university revealed an interesting picture of students in GVSU's College of Engineering & Computing, perhaps indicating that their educational experience at GVSU is qualitatively different from that of their peers in other academic …

Pisa 2015: Financial Literacy In Australia, Sue Thomson, Lisa De Bortoli

Dr Sue Thomson

The main focus of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) financial literacy assessment is on measuring the proficiency of 15-year-old students in demonstrating and applying the knowledge and skill that they have learned in and out of school. Like other PISA domains, financial literacy is assessed using an instrument designed to provide data that are valid, reliable and interpretable. PISA is an international comparative assessment of student achievement directed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). PISA measures how well 15-year-olds, who are nearing the end of their compulsory schooling in most participating educational systems, are prepared …

Is A Students’ Ability To Critically Self-Reflect, Related To Their Performance On Physiotherapy Clinical Placements?, Sarah Brooks, Nikki Milne, Rob Marc Orr, Rebecca Terry

Rob Marc Orr

Background. The relationship between students’ reflective ability and performance on physiotherapy clinical placement is currently unclear.

Objectives. To investigate: i) if a relationship exists between students’ critical reflective ability and performance on physiotherapy clinical placement; and whether these relationships differ by ii) Critical reflective task (CRT) rank grade or, iii) by gender.

Design. An observational cohort study design.

Methods. Critical Reflection Task (CRT) marks and clinical placement (APP) scores from 196 (F=94; M=102) post-graduate, entry-level physiotherapy students were analyzed.

Results. A significant moderate predictive relationship was found between CRT marks and APP scores (r=.411, p2=.169, SEE=12.79). There was a weak …

Processes And Strategies For Assessing Social Responsibility Learning In Community-Engaged Pedagogy: An Architectural Design Studio Perspective, Sara Khorshidifard

Sara Khorshidifard

This article offers insights on course design elements and assessment strategies creating experiences and measures for social responsibility learning in architectural design education. The learning, a least considered and most overlooked concept in architecture, is where most design pedagogies fall short in educating. The following questions frame the study: What are some useful tactics to make community-based learning integrations more successful? What are some techniques to help measuring social responsibility outcomes? After mapping the literature, explaining the context, and analyzing the process, the article looks into applied assessment tools and strategies. Closer investigations reveal the approach taken in making the …

Recognizing College Students Of Today: Generational Shifts Prompt Pedagogical Shifts, Kristen Cvancara, Kristen P. Treinen

Kristen Cvancara, Ph. D.

As educators strive to continually improve the learning potential of the students in our classrooms, it is wise to evaluate traits of the students that may influence the effectiveness of the pedagogical methods employed. To this end, this essay introduces the reader to descriptions of today’s college students that identify this cohort as unique in learning style as well as life experience from all previous generations. An assessment method was used to investigate the degree to which current students identify with these generational stereotypes. The method and results of the assessment are discussed, and suggestions for adopting new pedagogical strategies …
