To see the world as a meteorologist, one must understand and interpret atmospheric processes through representations depicted on two-dimensional weather charts and maps that encode large amounts of spatial and numerical data. This is a cognitively demanding and spatially challenging task, especially for students with burgeoning levels of meteorology knowledge, who lack the expertise of practiced meteorologists that read such charts and maps with ease. Organized climate change dissention groups spend a considerable amount of time and energy developing messages designed to convince the public that anthropogenic climate change is neither a reality nor a threat. These messages work against the efforts of climate educators and can be divided into two categories; messages that provide alternative explanations for warming, or messages that attack the work of scientists studying anthropogenic climate change. Building knowledge through a process of construction is a common framework through which school science is taught. Teaching and assessment modalities for human anatomy curriculums vary between schools. The University of Nebraska Medical Center utilizes an integrated gross anatomy lab curriculum including hands-on dissection, lecture, and 3-D models. The GCBA 909 course, Human Gross Anatomy Lab, just recently incorporated graded dissections and demonstrations into their master of medical anatomy (MMA) curriculum. The focus of this study is to consider educative assessment in the science classroom and its effectiveness in assessing student-centered learning. By using educative assessment to measure learning, student work can be evaluated by rubric in addition to a traditional summative assessment. In comparing the student learning measured using the rubric results and traditional results, there was no statistical difference between the two assessments. However, the educative assessment provided greater insight into higher levels of learning. Conversational data also showed evidence of skills-based learning in the field of science. Further research into the applications for ‘at-risk’ students is required.

The need for schools to develop and implement actions that will clearly improve the academic performance of all children is of great importance. Schools face pressure to improve K-12 mathematics instruction to reach all students, regardless of economic, linguistic, or cultural background (NCSM, 2008, 2016). Supporting academic excellence and equity in school mathematics requires strong leadership (Blankstein & Noguera, 2015). Recognizing that leadership in a school does not fall on the shoulders of just one person (Spillane & Healey, 2010, p. 256), the purpose of this case study was to explore the “how” of leadership, specifically the leadership practices that get us to the “why” (e.g., equity) and “what” (e.g., leadership for excellence) of mathematics education. The overarching question driving this research was: “What are the leadership practices that are intended to promote equity and excellence in mathematics education?” Using Spillane, Halverson, & Diamond’s Distributed Leadership Perspective (2004), the goal was to understand the respective distributed roles teachers and other individuals took in the process of achieving equity and excellence in mathematics at one elementary school. Formal (e.g., Head of School, Central Office Administrator) and Informal (e.g., teachers and parents) leaders were interviewed and observed. Data analysis focused on identifying the macro-functions (e.g., overall leadership practices) and micro-tasks (e.g., day-to-day, short-term tasks) that leaders engaged in to promote equity and excellence. Leadership practices were focused in three areas: Supporting the Teaching/Learning of all Students; Supporting the Teaching of Diverse Students; and Parent/Family Connection. Five primary categories of leadership practices were identified: Relationship, Instruction Support, School Climate, and Parent Involvement.

Low self-efficacy has been linked to avoidance of teaching primary science; therefore, preservice teacher self-efficacy requires fostering to have graduates keen to teach primary science.
