Enhancing Science And Engineering Programs To Equip And Inspire Missionaries In Technical Communities, Dominic M. Halsmer, Jon M. Asper, Ben Zigrang

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Enhancements to science and engineering curricula are being considered in light of theologically-significant scientific discoveries, as well as the field application to form a coherent cosmology and worldview. In addition to including these ideas in current science and engineering courses, a new “Science and Faith” course is being developed to better equip and inspire science and engineering graduates for serving as “everyday” missionaries in their chosen fields.

This new course will focus on the knowledge and skills necessary for graduates to engage in fruitful dialogue with seekers from high-tech and highly-educated societies. Students will receive training in science-related apologetics, including …

Using Lost In Translation To Prepare Students For The Physical, Emotional And Spiritual Realities Of International Business, Ivan Filby Mar 2017

Using Lost In Translation To Prepare Students For The Physical, Emotional And Spiritual Realities Of International Business, Ivan Filby

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Over the last 30 years, international business opportunities have become more widespread. This rise in global business opportunities has not gone unnoticed by missiologists, and the development of the Business as Mission (BAM) movement has introduced a new realm of possibilities of linking business and mission. One potential weakness of this model is that international business managers often do not receive any missiological or theological training. It is likely that they receive less prayer support, less in-the-field support, and probably weaker moral accountability. As a result, many may be unaware of the some of the difficulties that they may face …

Decision-Making Using Mathematics, Richard H. Bishop Mar 2017

Decision-Making Using Mathematics, Richard H. Bishop

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

This paper presents a mathematical decision-making tool that is easy to use and express mathematically, requires only a little mathematical expertise, and gives results that are easy to interpret. The tool has been used extensively as part of a term project in a precalculus class. The decision-making process forces students to consider the Christian ideals of faith, morals, and ethics, and to use them in a quantitative form in order to make their decision. The overall success of the tool comes from the integration of several different kinds of student learning experiences in a properly designed project. That is to …

Supporting Critical Reflection In Pre-Service Teacher Education, Charlene Huntley Mar 2017

Supporting Critical Reflection In Pre-Service Teacher Education, Charlene Huntley

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Reflection has long been identified by teacher educators as a highly-desirable characteristic for future teachers. It is considered one determiner for effective, professional practice. However, the definitions for what is meant by reflection, as well as best practices for developing and sustaining its use, have become problematic. This synthesis is a review of the various working definitions and frameworks proposed by experts and teacher education programs. Studies focused on developing and sustaining critical reflection are also reviewed. Suggestions for teaching and sustaining critical reflection in teacher education programs are made based on the reviewed studies.

Using Top Ten Lists To Encourage Faith Integration Discussion In Economics Courses, Kent Saunders Mar 2017

Using Top Ten Lists To Encourage Faith Integration Discussion In Economics Courses, Kent Saunders

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

This article describes the use of top ten lists as a way to break the ice with students and begin a discussion about integrating one’s faith into the subject matter of a course. The literature has shown that the use of top ten lists has proven to be an attention-grabbing way of introducing a topic that encourages student participation and incites class discussion. The use of Biblically inspired top ten lists in economics classes was investigated with results similar to those observed in the literature.

Effectiveness Of A Writing Intensive Program To Increase Student Learning In An Introductory Chemistry Laboratory, Kenneth M. Weed Mar 2017

Effectiveness Of A Writing Intensive Program To Increase Student Learning In An Introductory Chemistry Laboratory, Kenneth M. Weed

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Student writing in the chemistry laboratory has always been an important part of the laboratory experience. Student learning is a complex process including many different factors. Proponents of writing to learn theory suggest that using writing in the laboratory experience should increase the amount of student learning in chemistry. To evaluate the impact of writing on student learning during an introductory chemistry laboratory experience, several lab sections participated in a study to compare student learning in non-writing labs to student learning in writing intensive labs. To compare student learning among the differing lab sections, students in each completed a pre-test …
