Background: Most Australian medical student places are government-supported, reducing the cost of tuition to about $10,000 each year, but some private places with fees cost up to $60,000 per year. In North America, debt at graduation is associated with different career choices. We explored the relationship between potential debt at graduation and future career preference. All over the world people are conducting cultural awareness programs in an effort to educate health professionals about working in a culturally safe way with their patients, in an effort to improve health outcomes. However there is little evidence that any of these programs have a long term impact on the cultural safety of the students practice once graduated.
