This dissertation examines the empirical literature regarding assessment and intervention of suicide, specifically regarding training counseling students to assess and intervene with potentially suicidal individuals. The author developed an online suicide assessment and intervention training module to train counseling students how to assess and intervene with suicidal clients. The author examined the effectiveness of the training module using an experimental randomized controlled pre-post design. Participants were assessed on their suicide intervention skills using the Suicide Intervention Response Inventory-2 (Neimeyer & Bonnelle, 1997), and suicide assessment abilities, abilities to determine level of suicide risk, and abilities to determine appropriate clinical actions …

Proteins play a critical role in nearly every biological activity. In consequence, organismal health and homeostasis often hinges on the ability of intracellular regulatory systems to sustain the quality and function of these diverse, structurally complex macromolecules. Correct protein function depends on correct form, and during periods of destabilizing cellular stress, protein quality is managed in part by the heat shock response, which acts to support, isolate, and reform new or damaged proteins, and in part by the autophagic recycling of abnormal proteins, cytotoxic protein aggregates, and terminally damaged organelles. Prior research has investigated the effects of either eccentric-only training or comparing eccentric and concentric exercise on changes related to strength and power expression, but no research to date has investigated the impact of altering the duration of either the concentric or eccentric component on these parameters. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the duration of eccentric (i.e. 2-second, 4-second vs. 6-second) muscle contractions and their effect on muscle strength, power production, vertical jump and soreness using a plate-loaded barbell Smith squat exercise. Running popularity has increased resulting in a concomitant increase in running-related injuries. Of these injuries, patellofemoral pain (PFP) is the most commonly reported. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine whether gait retraining by modifying footstrike patterns from rearfoot strike (RFS) to forefoot strike (FFS) reduces PFP and improves associated biomechanical measures, and whether the modification results in increased risk of ankle injuries. METHODS: Sixteen subjects (n=16) received clearance to participate by a licensed physical therapist, and were randomly placed in the control (n=8) or experimental (n=8) group. In this study, I explored the role and function of counselor educators' ideology in their sexuality counseling pedagogy, as demonstrated by teaching philosophy, curriculum, and teaching strategies. In line with my theoretical framework, queer feminist pedagogy, I employed qualitative multicase methodology with six counselor educators, bounded by the shared phenomena of teaching sexuality-focused counseling curricula. I performed critical discourse analysis on the dialogic and textual discourse generated from interviews and curricular document mining to identify ideologies embedded in educators' discourse. Individuals engaged in the production of art, who are untrained, and marginalized by disability, are known as outsider or visionary artists. With them in mind I sought to better understand the relationship between art-making and meaning-making. Students with disability attributes in my classroom were motivated by arts-based activities, prompting me to include art in the content I taught. The purpose of this dissertation was to understand the student experience and perception of change after participating in a before-school counselor intervention focused on learning prosocial behaviors and developing peer relational skills. This evaluation included both how students experienced the program and if they perceived any change in themselves after participating in the program. Qualitative methods are often used in evaluations because they tell the program's story by capturing and communicating the participant's stories (Patton, 2003, p. 2). Effects Of The Student Success Skill Program On Feelings Of Connectedness, Parent-Child Relationship, And Success Skill Engagement In Middle School Students, Phyllis Hannah Bowers

The author of the current study examined the effects of the Student Success Skills (SSS) program on middle school students' perceptions of connectedness, parent-child relationship, and engagement in success skills. The sample included 41 predominantly Hispanic seventh grade students from an impoverished community in the rural southwest. The author used a paired-samples t-test to determine the effects of the SSS program on connectedness, parent-child relationship, and success skill engagement. Overall, students reported significantly decreased perceptions of connectedness and success skill engagement. Current research has focused primarily on prescriptive models of professional development (PD), yet few have focused on teachers experiences of mandatory PD. This study investigated two types of modular worked examples; process-oriented (PSWE) and product-oriented (PDWE), for performance, cognitive load, and efficiency for nutrition diagnosis. One hundred and four students (104) from a 200-level course in human nutrition participated in the main study. Participants studied the worked examples and completed the practice phase during one regularly scheduled class period. Two weeks later the participants completed the maintenance phase during half a regularly scheduled class period. Both the practice and maintenance phases involved making nutrition diagnoses, using the correct International Dietetics and Nutrition Terminology (IDNT) and writing a diagnostic statement for two cases. …
