Assessing Your Assessments: A Hands-On Test Evaluation Workshop, Brendan Morse Dec 2015

Assessing Your Assessments: A Hands-On Test Evaluation Workshop, Brendan Morse

Brendan J. Morse

Appropriate test design and evaluation are key components of effective pedagogy. However, the rigorous statistical analysis of exams and other learning assessments is often underrepresented in professors’ teaching repertoires due to statistical apprehension and a lack of access to analysis programs. The purpose of this workshop will be to demonstrate how to easily overcome both of these hurdles. Basic statistical evaluation techniques for multiple-choice exams using classical test theory and item response theory will be discussed with an emphasis on practical applications of test-level (e.g., reliability) and item-level (e.g., difficulty, discrimination, and bias) analyses. Workshop participants will engage in an …

Designing A Learning Module Within A Dynamic Assessment Tool, Gayl O'Connor Oct 2015

Designing A Learning Module Within A Dynamic Assessment Tool, Gayl O'Connor

Gayl O'Connor

This Work-in-progress report describes the conceptualization and design of a learning module within a dynamic assessment and learning research tool. The prototype module aims to provide learning opportunities and support as students aged 14 to 16 investigate the relationship between kinetic and potential energy, and the principle of conservation of energy. The six related tasks in the module will also provide opportunities for students to explore scenarios and develop science process (inquiry) skills, specifically the control of, and relationship between, experimental variables. In order to gain insight into the learning taking place, appropriate tasks were designed according to a blue-print …

What International Surveys Tell Us About Australians' Mathematical Foundations, Dave Tout, James Spithill Jul 2015

What International Surveys Tell Us About Australians' Mathematical Foundations, Dave Tout, James Spithill

David (Dave) Tout

This presentation will look at some key messages from the Australian results of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), both released at the end of 2013. PISA assessed the mathematical literacy of 15 year-olds around Australia, whilst PIAAC assessed the numeracy proficiency of adults aged 15–74. What do the two surveys assess and are they telling a similar story? How solid are Australia’s mathematical foundations and what do they say about teaching and learning? How do Australia’s results compare internationally with those leading the field? What are some …

Population-Level Approaches To Increasing Mental Health And Wellbeing In Schools: Kidsmatter And Mindmatters, Katherine Dix May 2015

Population-Level Approaches To Increasing Mental Health And Wellbeing In Schools: Kidsmatter And Mindmatters, Katherine Dix

Dr Katherine Dix

This presentation showcases the continuing expansion of the KidsMatter and MindMatters national initiatives for student mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention in primary and secondary schools across Australia – now in over 3000 schools. As part of a broad approach to reducing problem behaviour, such as bullying, KidsMatter and MindMatters use best-practice blended learning approaches that raise school capacity. Focus is given to the KidsMatter and MindMatters strategies that support schools to reduce bullying by developing whole-school policy, prevention and management strategies. Evidence from KidsMatter and MindMatters schools is presented. It demonstrates potential increases in staff understanding and confidence …

The Effectiveness Of Diversity Initiatives At Suny Brockport Including Student Perceptions And Campus Climate, Kara Hiltz, Amanda Crowley, Marquia Westbrook May 2015

The Effectiveness Of Diversity Initiatives At Suny Brockport Including Student Perceptions And Campus Climate, Kara Hiltz, Amanda Crowley, Marquia Westbrook

Kara M. Hiltz

This presentation preliminarily examines the effectiveness of campus-wide diversity initiatives through the Office of the Assistant Provost for Diversity at the College at Brockport, State University of New York. Effectiveness will be measured by survey item responses and institutional data. Student perception data was obtained through item responses on the 2008 and 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) survey and SUNY Student Opinion Survey (SOS). The College's institutional research department collected the institutional data that is examined (e.g., enrollment diversity). Strengths, areas for improvement, and suggestions for future diversity initiatives will be presented. Keywords: diversity, initiatives, student enrollment, improvement, …

Sufficient Number Of Clusters And Cluster Size For The Three-Level Random-Intercept Multivariate Multilevel Model, Wanchen Chang, Keenan Pituch, Susan Beretvas Apr 2015

Sufficient Number Of Clusters And Cluster Size For The Three-Level Random-Intercept Multivariate Multilevel Model, Wanchen Chang, Keenan Pituch, Susan Beretvas

Wanchen Chang

The three-level multivariate multilevel model (MVMM) is a multivariate extension of the conventional two-level hierarchical linear model (HLM) and can be used to estimate and test the effects of predictors on a set of correlated continuous outcomes. The current simulation study examined the impact of number of clusters, cluster size, and other design characteristics on maximum likelihood (ML) parameter and standard error estimates, power, and type I error of three-level MVMMs with random intercepts and fixed slopes. The study also compared the MVMM results to those obtained from a series of HLMs. Results indicate that sample size requirements for the …

Sample Size Requirements For The Three-Level Multivariate Multilevel Model, Wanchen Chang, Susan Beretvas, Keenan Pituch

Wanchen Chang

The multivariate multilevel model (MVMM) is a multilevel regression approach to estimating and testing the effects of explanatory variables on a set of correlated continuous outcomes. The purpose of this study was to extend previous research on sample size requirements for maximum likelihood (ML) estimation of three-level MVMMs by including random slopes and cross-level interactions in the models. The study also compared the MVMM results to those obtained from corresponding univariate two-level hierarchical linear models (HLMs). Results indicate that sample size requirements for random-coefficients MVMMs were similar to those for HLMs across the conditions investigated in this study.

Review Of The Par Concussion App For Smartphones, Susan Davies, T. Sullivan, Sara Timms

Susan C. Davies

There has been an explosion in the number of health-related smartphone applications, or apps, available for download. These products nowinclude apps concerning concussion. From April to August 2011, at least seven concussion-related apps were released. The primary focus of these apps is assessment at the time of injury. One exception to this trend is Psychological Assessment Resources' (PAR) Concussion Recognition & Response: Coach & Parent Version.

PAR's Concussion Recognition & Response app provides a checklist of concussion signs/symptoms designed to help coaches and parents determine whether to remove a child from play and seek medical attention. Unlike its competitors, the …

Essay Question Formative Assessments In Large Section Courses: Two Studies Illustrating Easy And Effective Use, Andrea Curcio, Gregory Jones, Tanya Washington

Tanya Monique Washington

Do formative assessments, via practice exercises accompanied by generalized feedback, make a difference in student final essay and short-answer examination performance? If so, does the practice help some students more than others? We sought to answer these questions in two studies performed with law students. We also sought to devise a duplicable model for examining those same questions across disciplines. Finally, we hoped to develop an easily workable method to provide practice and feedback to large section courses without unduly burdening faculty. This chapter discusses our findings that practice exercises and generalized feedback formative assessments can be done in large …
