A Client-Based Description Of Reflecting Team-Work In Family Therapy , David Brown

Though the practice of reflecting team-work has a strong theoretical base there has been little research examining its actual use. What has been written is primarily based on the therapist's and/or supervisor's experience, rather than the client's. This dissertation describes clients' perceptions of two different strategies of reflecting team-work that emerged from interviews conducted and analyzed using a moderately structured ethnographic interview methodology. The primary results suggested that reflecting team-work was helpful in providing clients with different perspectives; that in-room teams should be used sparingly during early therapy; that teams should reflect at least twice in-session; and that a three-person …

This paper reports a study designed to increase the moral reasoning and multicultural competence of White students in a counselling internship. An intervention was conducted to determine the effectiveness of using a deliberate psychological education (DPE) approach that incorporated issues of cultural competence, oppression and diversity. This study attempted to discern if the DPE model could make a difference in the promotion of moral reasoning and multicultural competence of counsellor interns. This research involved an exploratory intervention to determine the effectiveness of using a deliberate psychological education (DPE) approach that incorporated issues of ethics, multicultural competence, oppression and diversity. The study attempted to discern if the DPE model used could make a difference in the promotion of ego development (which subsumes moral development) and multicultural knowledge and awareness of counselor interns. This study reflects a national survey of 295 CACREP counselor educators regarding their understanding of and support for the 2009 CACREP standards revision. It also assessed respondents' opinions about the proposed number of program credits (48, 60, other) and internship hours (600, 900, other) based upon whether the community counseling and mental health counseling specialty tracks merge or remain separate. Results indicate a difference in opinions about the curricular changes that reflects a historic and continuing tension around counselor identity issues.

Professional school counselors must increasingly be prepared to work in more racially and ethnically diverse school settings. At the same time, most school counselor trainees continue to be from the dominant culture, raising the likelihood of culture clashes and ethical violations. This article describes the use of a computer version of a measure of ethical sensitivity to racial and gender intolerance, the Racial Ethical Sensitivity Test-Compact Disk (REST-CD; Sirin, Brabeck, Satiani, & Rogers-Serin, 2003) with school counselor interns. New counseling students often have strong reactions when confronted with the concept of heterosexist privilege, and when expected to address issues of multiculturalism and diversity, personally and professionally. In this program evaluation article, the authors describe a model of new student orientation that focuses on inviting master's-level counseling students to embrace difference, especially regarding sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. Aggregate data regarding students’ evaluation of the program are included.

A growing population of Hispanic immigrants to the United States means that helping professionals need to gain knowledge about specific issues affecting these groups. Stresses related to the immigration experience and minority status can influence the use of alcohol and illegal substances by Hispanic adolescents. Because the family is considered the preferred unit of treatment for this population, studies addressing approaches to engagement and treatment are reviewed, and two promising models are highlighted: the strategic structural systems engagement approach and the brief strategic family therapy model.

There is an ongoing and pernicious debate within the field of counselor education surrounding the question of whether lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues should be included under the umbrella of multiculturalism. Some argue that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender concerns do not fit within the traditional framework of multicultural counseling, while others assert that they do. The purpose of this study was to explore how Peck’s (1987) stages of Community-Making could be identified and predicted for a collegiate basketball team over the course of consecutive seasons by exploring Cohesion, Flow, and athletic performance. The study utilized a repeated measures longitudinal survey design with the members of a Division I collegiate level female basketball team (N = 13) during the athletic seasons of 1999/2000 and 2000/2001. Ethnic labels provide insights to a client’s self-definition and meaning making. Results from a study of 500 undergraduates indicate that those who identified as Chicana/o, Latina/o, Hispanic, “hyphenated American” (e.g., Cuban American), or who identified by nationality differed on key psychological constructs. The importance of self-definition in counseling and research is discussed.

The Multicultural Action Project (MAP) is a cultural immersion project that requires counseling students to engage with diverse cultural com- munities on 3 levels: observation, information seeking, and action. To ascertain if participating in MAP improved the multicultural competence of graduate counseling students, the authors conducted an evaluation in which narrative analysis was used to examine the experiences of 3 graduate counseling students who participated in MAP. Through their narratives, the participants reported increased knowledge, awareness, and skills. The importance of sustained contact and interpersonal re- lationships in improving student learning outcomes is discussed and recommendations are provided.

Exploring The Etiology Of Ethnic Self-Hatred: Internalized Racism In Chicana/O And Latina/O College Students, Carlos Hipolito-Delgado

Internalized racism is rarely discussed in student affairs. Despite the negative effects of internalized racism on the mental health and identity development of college students of color, little is known about its etiology. Based on theoretical conceptions, the author explores if perceived racism and/or U.S. acculturation act as predictors of internalized racism in the Chicana/o and Latina/o community. Using multiple linear regression, U.S. cultural identity and perceived interpersonal racism acted as predictors of internalized racism for Chicana/o and Latina/o college students. The implications of these findings and the need for further research are discussed.

Although undocumented Mexican immigrants live in the shadows of U.S. society, they represent a growing demographic with unique sociopolitical and counseling needs. Due to limited educational achievement, limited economic opportunity, discrimination, and exclusionary policies, undocumented Mexican immigrants live a marginalized existence. Additionally, acculturative stress, changing gender roles, and fear of deportation negatively impact the psychological well-being of undocumented Mexican immigrants. Fortunately, community outreach, rapport building strategies, psycho-educational groups, and brief solution therapy have demonstrated success when working with this community. This article presents the findings of a grounded theory study of 3 graduate students’ lived experience of cultural immersion. Results indicated that participants experienced 3 phases (goal setting, interaction, and evaluation) and 4 themes (bias, gender, barriers, and selfawareness) during immersion. Recommendations for the implementation of immersion experiences are discussed.
