Despite the growing evidence of humanity’s impact on the natural world and the urgent need to shape citizens who understand the impact that their choices and actions have on their local and global environments, colleges and universities throughout the United States have been slow to add environmental education as a core component of their undergraduate curricula. Harnessing our shared interest in environment issues and the humanities, we designed and taught an experimental course in environmental literature for the honors program at Western Michigan University that we hope will become a template of what is possible in postsecondary environmental education. As legal educators consider how to improve the outcomes of legal education, maximizing the knowledge, skills, and values taught during the law school experience, consideration should be given to increasing interprofessional learning opportunities in the curricula. As Best Practices for Legal Education suggested, the creative thinking necessary for effective problem-solving includes an understanding of interprofessional dimensions of practice, but interprofessional opportunities are still the exception rather than the norm in legal education. Interprofessional legal education intentionally asks law students to blend the knowledge, skills, and values of two or more professions in order to address complex legal problems. Placing students …

Black Male College Achievers And Resistant Responses To Racist Stereotypes At Predominantly White Colleges And Universities, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

In this article, Shaun R. Harper investigates how Black undergraduate men respond to and resist the internalization of racist stereotypes at predominantly White colleges and universities. Prior studies consistently show that racial stereotypes are commonplace on many campuses, that their effects are usually psychologically and academically hazardous, and that Black undergraduate men are often among the most stereotyped populations in higher education and society. The threat of confirming stereotypes has been shown to undermine academic performance and persistence for Blacks and other minoritized students. The pathos of radical academia: notes on the impact of neo-liberalism on the universities, especially the audit culture, the production-model, casualization, academic scholarship, academic writing, peer reviewing, and open access. The authors suggest ways scholars can be radical within, and outside, of neoliberal academia. Part I, 'Missing in Action' appeared as an Academia.edu session in May 2015, where it attracted many comments. Part II, 'What Can Be Done?' is the authors' response to these comments. Upjohn Institute staff will recalculate the costs of the Challenge Scholars program under various scenarios based on program changes being considered by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation. The cost estimate will be based on program guidelines and proposed scholarship amounts provided by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, and that it will build upon previous modeling undertaken by the Upjohn Institute.

This presentation preliminarily examines the effectiveness of campus-wide diversity initiatives through the Office of the Assistant Provost for Diversity at the College at Brockport, State University of New York. Effectiveness will be measured by survey item responses and institutional data. Student perception data was obtained through item responses on the 2008 and 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) survey and SUNY Student Opinion Survey (SOS). The College's institutional research department collected the institutional data that is examined (e.g., enrollment diversity). There has been an explosion in the number of health-related smartphone applications, or apps, available for download. These products nowinclude apps concerning concussion. From April to August 2011, at least seven concussion-related apps were released. The primary focus of these apps is assessment at the time of injury. One exception to this trend is Psychological Assessment Resources' (PAR) Concussion Recognition & Response: Coach & Parent Version.
PAR's Concussion Recognition & Response app provides a checklist of concussion signs/symptoms designed to help coaches and parents determine whether to remove a child from play and seek medical attention. Unlike its competitors, the …

In this paper, we report how we put a newly developed Twitter application to work in the context of a Knowledge Management course taught at the Singapore Management University (SMU) allowing students to post and view relevant tweets in an organized manner for the benefit of collaborative class discussions and learning. Data will be presented from a decade-long project that aims to improve how new professionals are prepared to engage in substantive conversations about race and racism, work with ethnically diverse student populations, understand and address racial inequities, and foster inclusive campus racial climates. Attendees will have three opportunities to critically reflect on the sufficiency of what they learned about race in graduate school. Resources that should prove useful in remediating gaps in prior professional learning will be distributed.

One way that institutions have responded to hostile campus environments for minoritized students is by creating bias response teams. Based on a larger study, researchers use Rhoads and Black’s (1995) conceptualization of student affairs professionals as transformative educators and Stanton-Salazar’s (2011) framework of how institutional agents use social capital to examine how student affairs practitioners accrue social capital when responding to bias incidents. Our findings connect to student affairs professionals’ ongoing development of the equity, diversity, and inclusion professional competency

Do formative assessments, via practice exercises accompanied by generalized feedback, make a difference in student final essay and short-answer examination performance? If so, does the practice help some students more than others? We sought to answer these questions in two studies performed with law students. We also sought to devise a duplicable model for examining those same questions across disciplines. Finally, we hoped to develop an easily workable method to provide practice and feedback to large section courses without unduly burdening faculty. In 2001, the 77th Texas Legislature established a statewide BS/MD/DO pipeline program called the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) to increase opportunities for economically disadvantaged Texas students to access medical education. JAMP partners all of the state's four-year public and private colleges and universities with Texas's nine medical schools. The first JAMP students entered the undergraduate component of the program in 2003. This group of students and subsequent cohorts of entering students were recruited, tutored, counseled and mentored by health professional advisors known as JAMP Faculty Directors (JFDs). To date, 1076 Texas undergraduate students have entered JAMP, 538 have matriculated …

Sheep and wool have long been integral to the agrarian heritage of Western states, and still play a vital role in the region’s agricultural economy. From 1907-2012, Wyoming’s sole university supported wool research around the world through its Wool Department, complete with its own wool laboratory and library.
