Financial Management And Gender Equality In Interscholastic Athletics, Steve Chen
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Interscholastic athletic programs must avoid gender-based budgetary inequity lawsuits to ensure their successful operation. Potential problem areas are the methods used to generate athletic funds, female sports funding and the maintenance of Title IX compliance. Eighty-two interscholastic athletic directors from eastern Kentucky region shared their perceptions concerning these potential problem areas. They completed an online survey based on past literature [1, 2, 3] addressing themes concerning effective strategies for generating athletic funds and maintaining equitable athletic budgets for both gender sports. The results indicated that participants adopted both direct sales (food, apparels, and tangible product items) and indirect sales (advertising …

This paper presents the multi-year collaboration between Social Work faculty and community stakeholders in a rural Appalachian region to address the community needs generated by the high rate of substance abuse. A needs assessment was administered to substance abuse counselors, child protection workers, and intimate partner violence workers in twenty eight counties. Textbook Readability And Student Performance In Online Introductory Corporate Finance Classes, Chien-Chih Peng
Textbook Readability And Student Performance In Online Introductory Corporate Finance Classes, Chien-Chih Peng
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
This paper examines whether the choice of a more readable textbook can improve student performance in online introductory corporate finance classes. The ordinary least squares regression model is employed to analyze a sample of 206 students during the period from 2008 to 2012. The results of this study show that the student’s age, student’s major, student bachelor’s degree obtained, and number of hours a student works are significant determinants of student performance. In contrast to my expectation, I find that the choice of a more readable textbook does not improve student performance.

Current science education reform efforts emphasize teaching K-12 science using hands-on, inquiry activities. For maximum learning and probability of implementation among inservice teachers, these strategies must be modeled in college science courses for preservice teachers. About a decade ago, Morehead State University revised their science content courses to follow an inquiry approach. As part of the courses’ assessment, a locally-made, diagnostic pre- and post-test was prepared. The main purpose of this “ex post facto” study was to demonstrate how concepts from Item Response Theory can be used to detect and remove psychometrically faulty items, and how the remaining items can …
Valuation Of Exit Strategy Under Decaying Abandonment Value, Ming-Long Wang, Chien-Chih Peng
Valuation Of Exit Strategy Under Decaying Abandonment Value, Ming-Long Wang, Chien-Chih Peng
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
We examine the valuation of abandonment decision in a contingent claims model with uncertainty in future market conditions and analyze the effect of determinants on the abandonment value. We find the abandonment value is positively related with the number of abandonment opportunities. The increase in the volatility, variable cost, and facility value increases the expected abandonment value, whereas the increase in the growth rate and depreciation rate reduces the expected abandonment value. The volatility, growth rate, and depreciation rate are negatively related with the exit threshold, whereas the variable cost and facility value are positively related with the exit threshold.

Female College Athletes’ Perceptions On Gender Stereotypes And Discrimination In Collegiate Athletics, Steve Chen, Brandi Ratburn, Clarenda Phillips
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Forty years later under the provisions of Title IX, there are still many criticisms concerning the lack of actual gender equality in female athletics. This study examined 63 NCAA Division-I female athletes’ perception of the effectiveness of Title IX and gender stereotypes related to their athletic experience through a qualitative survey. The results indicated that female athletes still experienced performance- and behavioral-related stereotypes and biases, while participating in athletics. Participants also expressed the existence of gender differences in how athletic achievement was perceived and recognized. Researchers attempted to detail the need to continuously reduce the existing stereotypes and biases and …
