Spring Dance Showcase, University Of Maine School Of Performing Arts

Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series

The Dance concert involves over 100 students, faculty, and staff in a three night celebration of Dance. The program will include 12-16 individual performances that span many genres of dance including Hip Hop, Jazz, Ballet, and Tap among others. This event draws a crowd of students, faculty and community members to the campus and has become a very popular event.

Culturefest is an annual event hosted by the International Student Association and the Office of International Programs. US students from multicultural backgrounds take part and celebrate their families' heritage. The best part of Culturefest is the food court which will offer a variety of food from around the globe.

The International Dance Festival is a popular annual showcase that adds global diversity to our UMaine campus community. This event provides both domestic and international students with an opportunity to teach, learn and share with one another through the art of dance. The International Dance Festival is hosted by the International Student Association and the Office of International Programs. The 2016 International Dance Festival will be held on Saturday, February 20 at the Collins Center of the Arts at 2 pm and 7 pm.

The University of Maine Symphonic Band has invited Dr. Nicholas Williams to be a guest conductor and clinician for the University of Maine Symphonic Band and our guest band from Hampden Academy; both bands will perform on the December 8th concert at the CCA. Our guest conductor will also give a performance clinic for the Old Town High School Band while in our region.

In its thirty-fourth consecutive semester of programming, the New Writing Series will host six readings featuring four poets (John Keene, Prageeta Sharma, Divya Victor, and John Yau) and two fiction writers (Emily Fridlund and Joanna Walsh).

These writers are all highly active across the full spectrum of literary activity. They are editors, publishers, and anthologists; translators and tale-tellers; art-makers and trail-blazing scholars.

The Projekti Arkeologjike I Shkodres (Pash): Combining Paleoenvironmental And Archaeological Data From A Balkan Lacustrine Landscape, The University Of Maine Anthropology Department

The Projekti Arkeolojike i Shkodres (PASH) conducted five years of interdiciplinary, diachronic field research (2010-2014) in the Northern Albanian region of Shkoder, targeting the plain and hills that ring Shkodra Lake. The project was designed to address changes in landscape, settlement, and land use, beginning in prehistory. Intensive archaeological survey of 16 square kilometers identified 15 sites of all periods, many of them multicomponent, and 175 prehistoric burial mounds. Four mounds and three sites were targeted for test excavations, allowing the beginnings of a regional absolute chronology. A program of geological coring is helping to clarify the varying size of …

Urinetown is a satirical comedy musical that pokes fun at politics, greed, musical theater, and even its own name. It takes place in a world where water is so scarce that you have to pay to pee, and the rates keep going up. It opened on Broadway in 2001 and was nominated for 10 Tony awards and won three. UMaine's production of Urinetown will feature over 60 students, faculty, staff, and guest artists, and will take place in Hauck auditorium for seven performances.

The New Media Department and Intermedia MFA Program are requesting funding to help support a fall lecture series. The following visiting researchers and artists will share their expertise in the following areas: an evening lecture with a question and answer period to follow, classroom visits, direct one-on-one student meetings and/or critiques and performances or other public presentations. The artists have been selected because of the quality and engaging nature of their work. The artists' desire to interact with the students in a learning environment and to engender excitement about the arts on campus was another qualifying factor in their selection.

"From the Top" is a show that showcases the talents of young, classically trained musicians from around the country. In this case, producers from the show auditioned young musicians from Maine. Those selected will be featured at the live performance at the Collins Center. The program is recorded and later re-broadcast on public radio stations nationwide, including MPBN.

Maine Sculptor Mark Herrington will be our Visiting Artist in Residence April 27-May 1, 2015. Herrington will provide daily demonstrations and art talks in and around the Sculpture Studio, free and open to the public and campus community. Herrington will be working with various carving techniques in stone, culminating that week in a finished sculpture that will eventually be placed in a garden on campus designed by Elaine Elliot. This work will also be scanned and we will produce a smaller scale version from a 3D printer on campus.

The Judaic Studies Program at the University of Maine has invited Rabbi Richard Address, Founder and Director of www.jewishsacredaging.com to campus in October 2015 to deliver a presentation entitled "Sacred Approaches to Mental Health Issues." Using Jewish tradition as a starting point, this lecture offers ways of thinking about mental illness and examines how the sacred impacts our understanding and approaches to it. Specifically, the program will "explore the traditional definitions of a person dealing with mental illness, trace the diagnostic approach that tradition gives us and examine how the sources can inform us in dealing with current situations" (www.jewishsacredaging.com)

Richard has performed with Orchestra of St. Luke's, Clarion Society, Early Music New York, New York State Baroque Ensemble, American Classical Orchestra, and Concert Royal. He was formerly Associate Concertmaster with the Moscow Ballet at Spoleto Festival USA.
