The oversimplification with which the new Common Core State Standards approach the instruction of students with disabilities leaves much to be desired on the part of the classroom teacher, who is left to determine how the standards will be made accessible for all students. The new standards require increased skill and application across the subject areas. Those students with specific learning needs may require additional support, altered classroom instruction and an increase in staff-to-specialist collaboration. Abstract The intent of my project was to examine the way I assess my students’ math in my 9-12 Montessori classroom given the new Common Core standards. The study involved six students, varying ages 9-11, in a public school setting. Data collection methods included pre- and post- assessments, observations, written responses to Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK), and a brief questionnaire about the attitudes toward the various types of assessment (See Appendix A). While classroom teachers are grappling with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and its implications for instruction in the core curriculum, designing effective intervention to meet the needs of diverse struggling readers poses another challenge, especially because Response to Intervention (RTI) as an instructional framework frequently emphasizes the teaching of discrete skills. Experts have concluded that intervention focusing primarily on foundational skills without instruction in comprehension is not only contrary to literacy research, but also antithetical to the shift to contextualized literacy instruction, resulting in fragmented instruction for those most in need.
