Religious Education Leadership And The 21st Century: Overcoming Disconnectedness, Michael T. Buchanan
Religious Education Leadership And The 21st Century: Overcoming Disconnectedness, Michael T. Buchanan
eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia
The role of the religious education leader is a relatively new role within Catholic education in Australia. This leadership position has evolved since the time of its emergence in the decades following Vatican II; however, there appears to be a lack of clarity and understanding about the role and its impact upon a school. While the religious education leader plays a significant role in building a school community, a recent study which sought to discover the kinds of support these leaders need found that many religious education leaders encountered experiences of disconnectedness in their own school communities. Drawing on the …

Leading The Way: Catholic School Leaders And Action Research, Anthony C. Holter, James M. Frabutt, Ronald J. Nuzzi
eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia
Recent research extols the value of problem-based learning strategies in exemplary school leadership preparation programs as one way to provide school leaders with the appropriate tools to systematically use data to make important decisions. The purpose of this study was to address the current gap between the noted importance of problem-based learning strategies in leadership preparation programs, and the demonstrated effect these strategies have on the knowledge, skills, behaviours, and values of school leaders. The study employed a longitudinal mixed-method research design to examine discrete action research skills, behaviours, and values of 44 candidates enrolled in a Master of Arts …
Building Sustainable Leadership In Multicultural South African Catholic Schools, Mark Potterton, Cullen Mackenzie
Building Sustainable Leadership In Multicultural South African Catholic Schools, Mark Potterton, Cullen Mackenzie
eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia
The article summarises an innovative approach taken to develop school leaders in multicultural South African Catholic schools by the Catholic Institute of Education. The reported program is built on the idea that leadership and administration are essentially moral activities and that teaching and educational leadership must have a moral purpose. The article recognises that with the current malaise in schooling in South Africa, there is a need for strong, inspiring leadership that is able to bring about systemic change by talking to the ‘minds and hearts’ of people. One of the most notable results of the program has been that …
Historical Inquiry Into The Construction Of Religion As A School Subject For Catholic Schools In Australia, Thomas A. O'Donoghue, David Byrne
Historical Inquiry Into The Construction Of Religion As A School Subject For Catholic Schools In Australia, Thomas A. O'Donoghue, David Byrne
eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia
One of the most distinctive features of Catholic schools, both past and present, is their religious character. In Australia, as in many other parts of the world, the Catholic community invested significant energy developing and preserving this character. Central to this has been the teaching of Religion. Yet, from a historical perspective, there has been little effort undertaken to understand how Religion as a subject in Catholic schools has been constructed. This paper takes its lead from the latter observation. It is in three parts. First, the general historical background is outlined. Second, the importance of producing historical analyses of …

Schleicher is responsible for the Directorate of Education and Skills’ research, analysis, and publication of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), the OECD Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC), the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS), and the development and analysis of benchmarks on the performance of education systems. The OECD reports on PISA, PIAAC, and TALIS were released between December 3, …
Personal Reflections On Leadership For Change: An Invited Article, Gary A. Ransdell
Personal Reflections On Leadership For Change: An Invited Article, Gary A. Ransdell
International Journal of Leadership and Change
Leadership is both an art and a science. It requires one to understand what leadership actually entails before thoughtfully applying the principles that ensure effective positive leadership and creating the conditions that must exist for effective leadership to occur and to be sustained. The leadership dynamics described in Leadership for Change are shaped by a 40‑year career in higher education — the last 16 of which have been spent as President of Western Kentucky University.
Gender And Leadership: Reflections Of Women In Higher Education Administration, Dana Dunn, Jeanne M. Gerlach, Adrienne E. Hyle
Gender And Leadership: Reflections Of Women In Higher Education Administration, Dana Dunn, Jeanne M. Gerlach, Adrienne E. Hyle
International Journal of Leadership and Change
Scholarly work on leadership, both inside and outside the academy, has been male-centric, in that it most often has been conducted by men and focused on male leaders. As a result, male behaviors and characteristics in leadership roles have been the standard against which women leaders are assessed. Reflection research is employed in this article to examine the leadership experiences of three women higher education administrators in order to provide insight into women’s behaviors as academic leaders. The insights gained will help us understand how women navigate the male-centric realm of higher education administration, and can provide guidance for women …
Challenging The Spectacle: A Case Study On Education Policy Advocacy, Gerardo M. Gonzalez, Charles L. Carney
Challenging The Spectacle: A Case Study On Education Policy Advocacy, Gerardo M. Gonzalez, Charles L. Carney
International Journal of Leadership and Change
Much of the current education reform movement is centered on promoting policies aimed directly at improving teacher performance and, in turn, student learning. However, much of the advocacy has divided policymakers and educators by using ideologically charged methods that do not promote reasoned discussion or compromise. Schools of education have sometimes become targets for state-level policymakers who present teacher preparation programs as part of the problem. This paper is a case study of leadership by a school of education in advocating for policy. Viewing the circumstances through the lens of “political spectacle” theory, this study outlines how utilizing an advocacy …
Online Doctoral Programs: Can They Produce The Business Scientists And Leaders Needed For The 21st Century?, Joanne C. Preston
Online Doctoral Programs: Can They Produce The Business Scientists And Leaders Needed For The 21st Century?, Joanne C. Preston
International Journal of Leadership and Change
This manuscript reviews the effectiveness of online education, pointing out the weaknesses and the more recent positive outcomes. Regardless of the positive reviews, employers view online education negatively and will hire students from campus programs over online or blended (hybrid) programs. What characteristics can make one online program better than others? These programs are reviewed, but the exploration found that even the reviews for traditional programs are negative. Because of our economic-driven culture, many are calling for a drastic change in traditional doctoral education, saying that PhDs that choose only the academic arena are no longer needed because they serve …
Leadership And Loneliness, Ami Rokach
Leadership And Loneliness, Ami Rokach
International Journal of Leadership and Change
This article addresses leadership and loneliness and examines the interaction of these two constructs. The literature suggests that leaders (educational, state, business, and organizational) endure stress, alienation, loneliness, and emotional turmoil. These may lead to health problems and negatively affect social and familial relationships as well. The interaction of leadership and loneliness will be highlighted. Relevant literature will be reviewed on leadership and its characteristics and effects on those who succeed and get to the “top.” Loneliness will be examined and how it may affect people in general, and leaders in particular; the article will close with suggested strategies as …
Ending Genocide And Creating Human Right: A Call To Leaders In Higher Education--Exploring The Visionary Leadership Of Raphael Lemkin And Eleanor Roosevelt, Sam Mcfarland
International Journal of Leadership and Change
I first argue briefly that a basic course on human rights, now rarely taught in American universities, should be offered everywhere. I then describe the visionary leadership of Raphael Lemkin, who almost singlehandedly created the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and the inspirational leadership of Eleanor Roosevelt, without whom the Universal Declaration of Human Rights may never have been written. Their efforts and achievements are reviewed, and several of their common qualities that made them successful are noted.
Providing The Fuel (And Passing The Flame), Todd Pagano
Providing The Fuel (And Passing The Flame), Todd Pagano
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
At the risk of opening with a cliché statement- at the heart of the most effective mentor is a burning passion. The fuel for this passion is a desire to convince, not just try to, but actually convince your mentee that you care about their success (be it in the classroom, career, or personal life). I am guilty of believing in, and living by, this cliché. However, despite passion being my primary motivator, I am not unwilling to admit that rationale for mentoring can sometimes transcend this ethically normative line of thinking. I believe that there are also sometimes quantitative, …

Ex Ovo Omnia, Todd Pagano
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
One of history’s most diverse thinkers metaphorically depicted humanity’s dangerous reliance on nonrenewable energy resources as an unborn chick in an egg. American philosopher, poet, scientist, and mathematician, Buckminster Fuller, described the nutrients in an egg as the temporary and extinguishable support required for the development of an unhatched chick. Once the nutrients are depleted, the chick must break from its shell and cultivate its own mechanism for survival. Symbolically, he explained that the human population must view the use of earth’s finite resources as the nutriment in an egg that can be provisionally relied upon in order to provide …

Growing Into The Digital Age: A Small Academic Library Confronts The Practical Challenges Of Transition, Steven Gromatzky
Growing Into The Digital Age: A Small Academic Library Confronts The Practical Challenges Of Transition, Steven Gromatzky
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
This paper outlines the recent history of the Benedictine College Library and traces the development of the library’s digital collections since 2006. The librarians have worked to provide an integrated search solution through the EBSCO Discovery Service and streamline off-campus access through EZPROXY. As the library’s electronic resources have grown, we have continued to support its historic core collection in the humanities as well as some unique and eclectic special collections. A range of issues are discussed: integrating electronic resources, ensuring 24-hour access, working with IT staff and the impact of the institutional culture on the college library. The challenges …
Please Come In!: Transitioning From No Access To An Open Door In The Special Collections And Archives, Ashley Todd-Diaz
Please Come In!: Transitioning From No Access To An Open Door In The Special Collections And Archives, Ashley Todd-Diaz
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
After four years of being closed to patrons due to a combination of a mold outbreak, renovation, and transitioning to a new location, the Emporia State University Special Collections and Archives reopened in fall 2012. While the department was closed, staff members worked hard to care for the collections, reply to patron requests, and prepare to open our doors again; however, after all that work we were not prepared for the lack of patrons walking through the doors. This paper shares our successes and lessons learned, as well as offers ideas for implementing innovative outreach strategies that challenge a variety …
Exploring The Revision Of The Acrl Information Literacy Standards, Gloria Creed-Dikeogu
Exploring The Revision Of The Acrl Information Literacy Standards, Gloria Creed-Dikeogu
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
The Association for College and Research Libraries (ACRL) information literacy standards are currently under revision. As a result, several new concepts have been introduced that will no doubt impact information literacy across the United States. What do librarians understand about the new ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (2014) that is being developed for application in academia? How will the new Framework (2014), the revision to ACRL Standards (2000), impact the way librarians structure and teach their information literacy classes? This paper summarizes the revisions that have been made up until the last ACRL recommendations draft from June …

Libraries In Transition: 21st Century Library Systems, Art Gutierrez, Earl Givens
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Libraries are in a state of flux and the integrated library system (ILS) is no exception. In their quest to provide greater access to resources and remain relevant, libraries are somewhat driving this new innovation in systems. We need systems that provide greater interoperability and flexibility to provide a similar user experience that patrons are seeing online elsewhere such as Google and Amazon. This is where still developing cloud based systems come in. These new 21st century systems include OCLC’s Worldshare Management Services (WMS). This looks at one 21st century library system and also share one library’s migration …

Publishing And Archiving Trends In Open Access: Preliminary Results, Jenny Oleen, Diana Farmer, Livia Olsen
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Agricultural researchers are engaged in the growing open access (OA) movement, either publishing in OA journals or archiving in OA repositories. The latter is reflected in the use of the institutional repository (IR) at Kansas State University (K-State), a land grant institution. K-State library faculty are analyzing faculty publications to determine the publishing and archiving habits of selected researchers. Reviewing copyright agreements from journals reveals those with policies for archiving post-prints in an IR; articles by these authors are compared to their total three-year article output to determine the efficacy of the current IR program at K-State. Chosen for analysis …
A Newcomer’S Perspective On The Changing Academic Library: Library To Learning Commons, Lauren Hays, Lindsey Warner
A Newcomer’S Perspective On The Changing Academic Library: Library To Learning Commons, Lauren Hays, Lindsey Warner
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Academic libraries are undergoing a great deal of change as they transform themselves from a traditional library to a learning commons. These changes are driven by an increased focus on assessment, data-driven decisions, the need to reach students, and a focus on teaching information literacy. Library schools are responding to transformations in the field through changes in recruitment practices, advising strategies, technology integration, and curriculum. The combined goal of these activities is to ensure that schools can create a diverse group of graduates who are prepared to meet the pedagogical, technological, and administrative challenges of the changing academic library environment. …

Using Gimlet And Libraryh3lp To Improve Services At The Butler Community College Libraries, Ronda Holt, Teresa Mayginnes, Samuel K. Willis
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Librarians from Butler Community College will speak about two tools, Gimlet and Libraryh3lp, which they use to improve service and track statistics at the circulation desk and online. The combination of the two software products enables them to track statistics and issues from reference inquiries, along with circulation, college, directional, and technical help questions. Gimlet is an easy and inexpensive desk statistics tracker and knowledge base that allows libraries to staff their desks wisely.
Altmetrics: What Good Are They To Academic Libraries?, Sarah W. Sutton
Altmetrics: What Good Are They To Academic Libraries?, Sarah W. Sutton
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
New knowledge is built on existing knowledge and academic libraries are the primary repositories of existing knowledge for the scholars whose work they support. In these times of belt tightening and budget reductions, it behooves academic libraries to think about how to demonstrate to administrators the value being returned on investments in the library, and to provide scholars with tools to do the same. Traditional means of measuring the quality of new knowledge like the impact factor and h-index are being made richer and more meaningful through the addition of new, social media based alternative metrics. Altmetrics also provide scholars …
Parts Of The Whole: Strategies For The Spread Of Quantitative Literacy: What Models Can Tell Us, Dorothy Wallace
Parts Of The Whole: Strategies For The Spread Of Quantitative Literacy: What Models Can Tell Us, Dorothy Wallace
Numeracy
Two conceptual frameworks, one from graph theory and one from dynamical systems, have been offered as explanations for complex phenomena in biology and also as possible models for the spread of ideas. The two models are based on different assumptions and thus predict quite different outcomes for the fate of either biological species or ideas. We argue that, depending on the culture in which they exist, one can identify which model is more likely to reflect the survival of two competing ideas. Based on this argument we suggest how two strategies for embedding and normalizing quantitative literacy in a given …

South African Principalship, Agency & Intersectionality Theory, Michèle Schmidt, Raj Mestry
Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
Gender bias towards South African female principals remains a problem and compelling issue for research. The Constitution policy addresses gender equality, yet women still do not experience equal rights in practice. This study uses a theory of intersectionality to examine two Black South African women’s leadership experiences in their roles as principals in two South African schools. The goal of the paper is to examine how these women negotiate obstacles in their work that may constrain their agency as leaders in South African schools. The project involves semi-structured interviews and the results provide a significant contribution to the small body …
