Ten Hypotheses About Tolerance Among Latin American Adolescents, Daniel Caro, Wolfram Schulz
Ten Hypotheses About Tolerance Among Latin American Adolescents, Daniel Caro, Wolfram Schulz
Dr Wolfram Schulz
Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, race, mental and/or physical disability, religious background, HIV/AIDS status, and ethnic origin affects the well-being of minorities and society in general. Recent research in North America underscores the importance of contact with diverse networks, intergroup discussions, a social dominance orientation, religious beliefs, and the school climate, among other factors, to explain tolerance for minorities. Theoretical and empirical work in Latin America is less extensive and has been limited by the lack of quantitative data. This article evaluates 10 different hypotheses about tolerance, using data from eighth-grade students in six Latin American countries that …
Fit-To-Model Statistics For Evaluating Quality Of Bayesian Student Ability Estimation, Ling Tan
Fit-To-Model Statistics For Evaluating Quality Of Bayesian Student Ability Estimation, Ling Tan
Dr Ling Tan
Bayesian ability estimation is a statistical inferential framework constructed from a measurement model and a prior knowledge model. It is attractive in practice because Bayesian estimation methods offer an elegant way to incorporate appropriate knowledge on target ability distribution in order to improve the accuracy of ability estimation, when there are uncertainties or errors in observable data. One hurdle for applying Bayesian-based methods is evaluating the validity of Bayesian ability estimates at individual-level. This study investigated a class of fit-to-model statistics for quantifying the evidence used in learning Bayesian estimates. The relationship between fit-to-model statistics and root mean square error …

A collection that examines the centers that support communication departments or across-the-curriculum programs as higher education focuses more attention on the communication field. The authors in this text address theoretical issues covering topics such as the importance of communication centers to higher education, the effects of communication centers on retention, critical thinking in the center, ethics, and more. These essays also explore ideas about center’s set-up and use of space, staff training, technology applications, and campus advertising and outreach. Communication Centers organizes cutting-edge knowledge of the theory and empirical research so as to serve practical use to peer tutors and …
Putting It Into Practice Developing Student Critical Thinking Skills In Teacher Education: The Models, Methods, Experiences And Results, Paula Jones, Debbie Haydon
Putting It Into Practice Developing Student Critical Thinking Skills In Teacher Education: The Models, Methods, Experiences And Results, Paula Jones, Debbie Haydon
Paula Jones
Most teachers would agree that they teach reasoning skills in their classes. However, are they explicitly incorporating strategies that teach students to think critically? If so, how do they know these methods are effective? The purpose of this book is to summarize and share a variety of methods for developing students’ critical thinking skills. Each chapter focuses on a select teacher education class where the instructor implemented components of the Paul and Elder Model of Critical Thinking.
Written from the instructor’s point of view, each chapter details how each instructor utilized components of the Paul and Elder Model to support …

Subtle Cognitive Impairment In Elders With Mini-Mental State Examination Scores Within The ‘Normal’ Range, Tim Friedman, G Yelland, S Robinson
Subtle Cognitive Impairment In Elders With Mini-Mental State Examination Scores Within The ‘Normal’ Range, Tim Friedman, G Yelland, S Robinson
Dr Tim Friedman
The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is commonly used as a screening test for dementia, yet MMSE scores above the cut-off for dementia (24–30) are widely thought to have limited utility, particularly in older persons. The study investigates whether scores within this range can be indicative of pre-symptomatic levels of cognitive impairment. Ninety-six community-dwelling older persons aged 62–89 years (mean = 75.2 years), who had obtained MMSE scores between 25 and 30, were tested on the computer-based Subtle Cognitive Impairment Test (SCIT). Compared with individuals who obtained a perfect score of 30 on the MMSE, individuals with scores of 28–29 made …
Student Reactions To Learning With Technologies: Perceptions And Outcomes, Kathryn Moyle
Student Reactions To Learning With Technologies: Perceptions And Outcomes, Kathryn Moyle
Professor Kathryn Moyle
While the creation and adoption of new technologies has increased in recent years, the educational sector often limits technology use. Despite this, many researchers are convinced of the vital role that technologies can play in learning and teaching. Student Reactions to Learning with Technologies: Perceptions and Outcomes brings together recent research findings about the views and expectations of students when including technologies in their studies. The chapters in this book suggest that the use of technologies in teaching not only makes learning more interesting but also offers possibilities for variations in the learning processes. While this book does not offer …

The Effect Of Different Active Learning Environments On Student Outcomes Related To Lifelong Learning, Susan Lord, Michael Prince, Candice Stefanou, Jonathan Stolk, John Chen
Jonathan Stolk
Calls for educational reform emphasize the need for students to develop a capacity for lifelong learning. Lifelong learners may be characterized as curious, motivated, reflective, analytical, persistent, flexible, and independent—traits that are critical for success in today’s globalized economy. Stakeholders in engineering education recognize that students’ development of the capacity for lifelong learning is vital for their success and that instructors play a critical role in influencing such outcomes. However, there is a critical lack of research in this area. This research investigates how instructor choices of active learning pedagogies affect student outcomes related to their development as lifelong learners …
Vulnerability And Emotional Risk In An Educational Philosophy, Sue Ellen Henry
Vulnerability And Emotional Risk In An Educational Philosophy, Sue Ellen Henry
Sue Ellen Henry
This article explores my thought and emotional growth following a difficult, yet very common, teaching moment. By exploring the bifurcation between thought and feeling, and making a theoretical distinction between feelings and emotion, I reposition emotion as a critical window into learning that works alongside cognition and suggest that a commitment to good teaching requires continual reflection on the emotive aspects of teaching and learning. This piece combines Laura Micciche’s (2007) idea that “emotion is central to what makes something thinkable,” (47) with Robert Kegan’s theory of orders of consciousness, to make an argument for what is lost in classrooms …
Students’ Quality Of Mathematical Discussion And Their Self-Determination In Mathematics., Karl Kosko, Jesse Wilkins
Students’ Quality Of Mathematical Discussion And Their Self-Determination In Mathematics., Karl Kosko, Jesse Wilkins
Karl W Kosko
Mathematical discussion allows for students to reflect upon math concepts and understand such concepts at a deeper level. This process of reflection requires a certain amount of internalization on the part of the student. This internalization is facilitated by meeting the needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness as advocated by Self-Determination Theory. The current study provides evidence of a relationship between fulfillment of these psychological needs and the quality of mathematical discussion students report they engage in. Correlational analyses and structural equation modeling of data from 176 high school Geometry students were conducted to examine this relationship. Results support the …

The Teacher's Role In Child-Directed Play, Genan Anderson, Anita Spainhower
Genan Anderson
In the context of a play scenario, the full range of strategies on the DAP Teaching Continuum used by a master teacher to facilitate mature socio-dramatic play is illustrated to the reader. The fluid, intentional movement of the teacher from strategy to strategy in response to the play of the children delineates the role the teacher plays in content-rich, child-directed play.

Werewolves And Other Shapeshifters In Popular Culture: A Thematic Analysis Of Recent Depictions, Kimberley Mcmahon-Coleman, Roslyn Weaver
Kimberley McMahon-Coleman
In recent years, shapeshifting characters in literature, film and television have been on the rise. This has followed the increased use of such characters as metaphors, with novelists and critics identifying specific meanings and topics behind them. This book aims to unravel the shapeshifting trope. Rather than pursue a case-based study, the works are grouped around specific themes--adolescence, gender, sexuality, race, disability, addiction, and spirituality--that are explored through the metaphor of shapeshifting. Because of its transformative possibilities and its flexibility, the shapeshifter has the potential to change how we see our world. With coverage of iconic fantasy texts and a …
